Public Holidays in Oman
We're travelling to Muscat for a week's holiday this Friday and just found out about two public holidays while we're there.
You know what's coming don't you.....
Their national day falls on Saturday. I'm hoping it's the same as here, ie. not dry.
However, the Sultan's birthday is the day after. I've tried to look for info about this but can't find a thing. I'd call the hotel but if it's anything like the ones in Dubai, the answer's going to vague to say the least.
Does anyone know if we'll be better off staying in our room and drinking duty free vodka Sunday night?

As far as I can recall neither National Day nor the Sultan's birthday are dry days. At any rate, they haven't yet announced National Day holidays - they usually make the holidays the week following National Day as, if they had it on the actual day, half the population would have high tailed it to Dubai or Abu Dhabi!

The official celebration date has not yet been announced. Widely expected to be the following weekend.

Just to let you all know: Oman has declared 'National Day' holidays on Sunday, 3rd December and Monday, 4th December. And to keep it all tidy has also declared Tuesday, 5th December a holiday for the Prophet's birthday. No idea when the dry night will be though.

Re: Public Holidays in Oman
Well, we got back yesterday and to be honest we wonder why we haven’t gone sooner, especially with it only been a 35 minute flight.
As the hotel was for mainly business people and not on the coast, we weren’t expecting much but we were very impressed. The pool (and bar) were wonderful. We got a business room which was upgraded and we had 2 hours of free booze and snacks every evening.
Muscat is lovely, especially the scenery, and the people are a lot friendlier than here.
We went to few restaurants near the hotel (Arabic, Turkish and Indian) and I didn’t get stared at once. This is the main reason of me not wanting to venture to Deira and Karama, unfortunately. All taxi drivers knew where they were going, which was a bonus.
We will definitely return.
It wasn’t dry, BTW

Just a FYI there's plenty of women living in Karama and Deira. I wouldn't be afraid to venture down there. It's a neat part of town.
