Could almost be a yuppy baby I know, but, I have a visa run to do this weekend and intend a night in Petra, does anyone know of a decent hotel in Petra and what else there is to do for 1 evening.oh and I may partake in a few beers as well if I am in the mood so info on that specialist subject would also be handy.

Pick up a Lonely Planet guide book. There's cheap hotels in Petra, but I stayed at the Petra Palace hotel, which cost me about 350 AED/night for a room. Decent place, a proper hotel. cheaper than that you're staying at dives.
The Petra Palace is close to the entry to the site. The whole point of going to Petra is to explore the amazing ruins and the fantastic countryside around it, not to booze. But if you want to booze, there's a bar inside a 2,000 year old Nabatean tomb, which is great for the atmosphere. Beer isn't cheap, about the same as you would pay here.
Most people are tired in the evening as exploring Petra requires a fair bit of physical strength (the hike from the entry into the park through the siq to the Treasury is almost 2 km. Then from there it's easily another few km to the other side of Petra, including a forty-minute climb to reach the Monastary). I spent a few nights in Petra/Wadi Musa back in April, and the village is dead quiet at night.

Re: Petra Jordan
Just got back so for future info if anyone is going. I booked the marriot hotel overnight 510 dhm,its a lovely hotel up on the hillside with terrific views, has good restaurants a nice fillet steak was only 17 jd. The staff are very friendly and pool is nice.Taxis are required to go anywhere from the hotel 7jd down to the entrance to little petra. With hindsight I would of booked the petra geust house which has the large tomb bar where I sampled a couple of fine ales and it is right at the little petra entrance.Little Petra itself is amazing but is a hell of a hike and I enjoy walking but would of struggled if I was with some one else. You can hire a horse or Donkey but I do not recommend this as they were awfullly shabby and badly treated from what I saw.Try and get there early because you will need a full day or leisurely 2 days.
