Hi Alan,

DO you have Google Earth? if so try that for location. Barsha is in Dubai, SZR is the main road (sorry car park) in Dubai

Im going to do a 'Bob' but try the wiki selection at the top of the page, lots of info..

However 28,000 is not really enough if that has to cover all your expenses

Not for a family who'd need a 2- or 3-bed and would have to cover school fees, but I'd say that for a single person living in a one-bed apartment, that would be more than enough to live very comfortably - 10k per month to get somewhere very close to work, 18k left for everything else. Even more left if Alan really wants to live further out, but I think you'd have to be a masochist to live any distance from work if you could afford to live close by.

In real money, that's £2400 left per month *after* the single biggest bill has been paid - most people in the UK have to pay their mortgage/rent and everything else out of a lot less than £2400! If Alan lived somewhere like International City (which I'd never recommend, but anyway), he would be looking at over £3000 per month in his pocket after rent.

You don't need to pay anywhere near that much for a 1-bed. You can find very nice places in the Marina for 8k a month, and I'm quite sure you could find something for similar money, or even less, in a place with less perceived cachet like Barsha.

Utilities per month (1K??) dont know, dont pay them
We're a family of three, and during the winter our DEWA bills are about 600 dhs per month, rising to roughly 1300 dhs in summer. That includes the cost of water for the garden, which is something Alan wouldn't have to worry about - plus his overall usage for water and leccy would likely be much lower anyway, especially if he found a place with no separate aircon charge.

Car 2K
Say about 3500 dhs per month over 3 years for a brand-new top-end Jeep Cherokee. So you're looking at something like...

Rent: 10k (max)
DEWA: 700 (estimated)
Phone/internet: 300 (est)
Car: 3.5k
Petrol: 800 (based on filling a 4x4 twice a week)

That's about 13,000 dhs - still the best part of £2000 - left after the main monthly bills, assuming that Alan's chosen to go for the high end of the 1-bed rental market in the (you can actually get a 2-bed in JBR for that) and has also bought a brand-new gas-guzzling 4x4. If he chooses to live further out and buys an economical used car, he'll obviously be even more dirhams-in.

for a single person like can i save at least 10 k per month after everthting deduction ?
You could, but taking my example above, you'd only have about 3000 dhs a month left to live on. If you're used to living on about £500 a month after all your main bills (excluding food), you'll obviously be fine Of course, if you cut all your living expenses - live further out, get an older, non-4x4 car - you can save a shedload of extra money, at the expense of what's likely to be a really horrible commute.

wht is the area like in al bashara ?
Not particularly pretty. It's a sandpit. If you want the nice grassy communal areas and lakes, you'd have to look elsewhere.

you will save if you never actually go out, which prob suits some on here

So how would you break down the monthly costs of a single man's life beyond rent, car and utilities then? I'm genuinely interested.

There are buses and taxis, but the bus routes are nowhere near as comprehensive as you'd expect in most major cities around the world (chances are that both your home and your work will be nowhere near bus stops), and in the summer you will *not* want to have to walk to and from a bus stop anyway!

2. Al-Bashra is it like Sheffield ? at least basic ammenities still available in that city ?
It's just like a large housing estate, but all the houses are in plots of sand rather than grass, there aren't really any communal public spaces, and there's a lot of construction work going on. If you want a vibrant community feel, you don't live in Barsha.

3. wht is DEWA ? i assume is electricy and water ?
Yes.

4. how big is 1 bed flat ? does it mean it has living room, one bedroom, one kitchen and one toilet ?
Size varies. There are some very big 1-beds and some very small 1-beds! Yes to one bedroom, one kitchen and one toilet.

5. if i stay in flat i save lots water and electricty bills ?
Yes, compared to a villa.

6. is all accomdation is defined as luxury such as it has swimming pool etc ?
"Luxury" is such an overused word here it has lost all meaning. Most apartment buildings will have a pool on the roof. Some (not all) will actually control the water temperature, so it's chilled in summer and warmer in winter.

I am really worry if 28K AED per month would enoyugh for me. fyi i don smoke dun drink and don really travelling because my wife will be in UK
Smoking is so cheap here that it wouldn't be an issue even if you did smoke. As a non-drinker, you *will* save a small fortune on the price of booze - but even then, a salary of 28k for a single man is very large by Dubai standards. Even if you rent an expensive apartment, you will still have a lot of money left each month. If Arbroath Abroad thinks you'll struggle on that, he clearly has very, very expensive tastes
