I am applying for ************* at the moment, want to work in Event Management in a hotel. Would coming over for 5 days and looking around for myself help? What is the situation for a 39 year old lady coming to Dubai by herself? I am checking with everyone I know here in UK I am sure I there must be someone I know there? Any information appreciated

coming over would at least give you an idea what it is like over here, so that is always a good thing I'd say...

Why all those ****? You really have to consider the cost element, namely the ticket and accommodation. If you need a short winter holiday then come. If time and money are in short supply, however, why not wait until you get a job offer? I sincerely doubt that running around various hotels in person will necessarily get you a job. Keep trying on the internet and telephone first. By the way, as a single woman of a certain age, you will love it here. Plenty of rich and handsome men, good restaurants, fine entertainment and excellent shopping...

Only if you manage to identify the correct person to speak to. From my experience, you will probably get passed on from pillar to post. If you have the energy and enthusiasm, please go ahead. If you need a room for a few nights, send me a pm...

Tracy, it is a good idea to come out to Dubai. The best thing to do is contact all the companies you would like to work for and find out the best person to speak to. Email or even better telephone them and let them know you will be in Dubai on such and such date and try and make an appointment. Also check out the info for employment agencies in the Wiki section of the ME page and contact them too.
You will be taken more seriously if you're here in person and these companies and employment agencies have thousands of CV's sent to them each week. If you're here to speak to them face-to-face they will see you are committed to working in Dubai.
By arranging all this before you come out here, you will save lots of hassle and time.
You may want to look at Abu Dhabi too.

Just trying to be helpful and earn my wife a few bob...incidentally, there is an Event Coordinator position being advertised on p15 of today's Seven Days. "Coordinate effectively all the operational tasks associated with a conference and an exhibition to ensure the smooth running of the assigned event". Not sure if the advertiser...Index Holding...is the actual employer or a recruitment company. If interested, you should send your CV to [email protected] but I suspect that some Arabic may be required.
