The UAE has a new public holiday.
As of November 30 this year, the date will annually be known as Martyr’s Day.
This fresh day off will be to acknowledge those who have made sacrifices across the nation while performing duties inside and outside of the United Arab Emirates.
2015’s Martyr’s Day falls on a Monday with the UAE's National Day taking place just two days later on December 2. The close dates could see those working in the country with a series of days out of the office.

Is it just me that finds the name "Martyr's Day" a bit emotive?
No disrespect intended to those who have died in the line of duty but martyr? The definition of a martyr is someone who has died because of their beliefs not necessarily because they were in the military.
I just think it would have been nicer to have used a different name for it that has fewer political connotations.

I concur with you, in Europe we have remembrance days. I suspect the naming is more to do with our geographic location.
