No chance. The city is far too spread out for the Metro to be of much use to expats. You still have to get too and from the metro stations, probably by car, unlike in HK or Singapore where you can walk to stations quite easily.

Sometimes the lack of foresight in this place is frightening. You also forget the weather - MTR is fine if the weather is also conducive to walking from the station to your final destination. Cannot imagine taking the MTR to work, getting off at the station and then walking in the blazing sun/heat for 10-15 minutes to get to work. |

Re: New Law in Qatar Banning Housewives to Drive
Part of the metro will be underground, in Deira for example, although the building site looks a complete mess so far.
Several countries have underground systems linked to offices. As well as Singapore, Toronto has this set up. Mainly places with more extreme temperatures. |
Re: New Law in Qatar Banning Housewives to Drive
IT IS TRUE.. CONFIRMED FROM MORE THAN ONE SOURCE check out gulftimes. New rules ‘soon’ on driving licencesPublished: Saturday, 10 February, 2007, 09:35 AM Doha Time
Staff Reporter THE Traffic Department is to issue new rules governing the issue of driving licences, probably restricting it to only those expatriates who really need it, Arabic daily Arrayah has reported. These new rules will be applicable to expatriates, particularly labourers and unemployed women, the report said. “It is likely that these segments of the society which do not need to drive to work will not be issued driving licences.” According to the report, these people will be banned from joining driving schools on the assumption that while the labourers are provided transportation by their employers and unemployed women mostly stay at home. “These measures are also in line with the department’s plans to ease traffic congestion on Doha streets which receive over 200 new cars every day.” this will generate some anger:mad: .. sorry Novi and Maltese.. |
