Smile Navigation system questions for Dubai

Hello,

Since Driving in Dubai is already bad enough and my husband and I got totally lost today I am planning to buy a navigation system. Here a few questions, maybe you know the answer to some or even better, all of them.

How does the GPS work without street names and constantly changing roads? How do you put in your destination without any address?

Are hotels, restaurants, super markets, buildings, malls on it saved by name?

If you have it, does it help you personally?

Which system do you have?

Do you have the Garmin 710 or 5000 and what is your personal experience with it?

Where did you buy your GPS and how much did you pay for it?

My husband does not want to buy it yet, since we are still renting cars and are planning to buy one soon, and he does not want to have it double in case there is already a navi in the car. How likely would that be? (We are probably going to buy a slightly used one.)

Thanks for your help guys.

It works by Kepplers law on eliptic orbits.

What happens is that the satellites emit a monochromatic RF signal. This is receved by the GPS and the correlsated redshifts from two or more identify your location with respect to the satellites.

Madam you need to relax!!

Dubai is a pain in the arse and we warned you to live in AD. Jusst slow down, take it easy and enjoy!!

We bought the Garmin 710 in Caerfours in Dubai and yes there are no street names but it has all the hotels or most of them and it also comes with other places in the Middle East. For Dubai it will never be keeping up on the every day changes but it will get you there or as near as damn it to where you need to be. Its better than nothing. Good luck

We have the Garmin nuvi with points of interest listed by name (eg shopping centres, petrol stations, hotels, schools etc). If you have a street number and exact suburb, you can find things fairly easily. If something isn't in mine, when I eventually find it, I just save it to my favourites and can find it next time. It's certainly a saving grace trying to find my way around. Though now I know some areas here, I sometimes take my own route as it tends to give the major roads as a route which are most of the time the busiest and take you twice as long when the traffic's heavy.

I will be curious to see how a sat nav handles 2 Al Khail Roads...
there is the old one past Ras Al Khor towards Hatta, and the newly opened road that leads to the Business Bay brigde is now also called Al Khail Road...

I reckon Dubai is easy enough to drive round, it's just perhaps the final search for a new building that will cost a bit of time but a satnav is not going to help you with that...
