It is also lifestyle, something different, an adventure - and for some - the only option - because they can't get a job in the UK and have to leave.

Those who think it's different are Fu**ing stupid.......

that doesn't actually put you in any better position. If you lose your job you are out on your ear. I'd rather just have salary and manage my own life - if I lose my job, I decide wether to leave or find another.

The problem is people have accepted salaries that are too low and spend too much - not that they have accepted packages which creates an artifical split between salary and benefits.

During Dubai's illusory 'good years' (when property prices went up because people thought they would  ), people lived beyond their means in a way they would never have done at home.

No income tax - well, that's extra spending money isn't it? [No - it's extra savings money, but it's too late to remind people of that now]. "We can afford two cars for ourselves, and a jet ski for our little angels Chlamydia and Euthanasia - mind you, we'll need a loan for that big 4x4... couldn't have afforded a car like that at home.... we love it here..... blah, blah, blah......"

Unless I can continue to rely wholly on commuting by Metro (which is brilliant, by the way, at least in Gold Class - apologies for my cynical scepticism about it a couple of years ago), I shall soon get round to buying a modest car for which I will pay cash up front and in full. If I then lose my job, I will NOT have an outstanding car loan.

.... etc .... etc .....

My husband and I were there for 4 1/2 and I loved it. Our son was born there too.
Unfortunately though my husband had such bad luck with salary from his employers and wasn't getting paid. We had no savings and had to skip; leaving car at airport etc. I am gutted. Been back home for a month now and its cold and rubbish. Living with family until hubby gets a new job a few months salary to be able to rent. He left debt here which will catch up with us and left an orrendous amount in Dubai. Didn't want to, but can't risk the jail sentance out there. Had to leave my Dad in jail there, whose company went down the pan, so he is proper screwed. Can't see him getting out for a long long time. And now I can't ever go back. Finding it really tough as I didn't want to leave : ( Its difficult talking to Hubby about it as he already feels bad enough, so wondering if anyone else is in the same boat?

You're missing the place that banged up your father and wants to put your husband in jail? Whats wrong with you?

Yes actually. Not everyone moved here because they were struggling in the UK or up to their eyes in debt.

yep thats right, we didnt move here for financial reasons, it was way back when nobody had heard of the place, and it was an adventure, as most people wondered why we needed to get on a plane to go to "aberdovy" where you can change at crewe or get the bus. lol

I'm sorry to say that most of us 30-somethings do/did actually have debt... student loans... a few grand on a credit card...

Not Debt with a capital D that accrued due to a lavish lifestyle and that you are eager to frown upon, just money that we needed at a certain point in time for a specific, necessary purpose.

Mainly coz it appears massively civilised compared to the country it borders.
