madinat...warning...
...a friend had a wallet stolen from the madinat yesterday, either from the agency or from sitting outside at ushna...
he had 3,000 dhs in there, various credit cards and a driving licence, so obviously had to report it to the police and jumeirah security. Apparently, the security guys said that they can't get surveillance cameras in place quickly enough because there are a number of gangs of eastern europeans (their description) going round robbing people...
so...just to be careful, i know i'm always very complacent here, but i will start to watch my stuff from now on...

Re: madinat...warning...
crime is definately on the up here, I had my mobile on the top of the pram the other day and my friend (ex Abu Dhabi 20 years) said if you were in AD that would get lifted! I was shocked!!! I try to remember to zip up handbags and not to carry alot of cash. Another good thing is to keep credit cards separate, in a credit card holder

I have a credit card holder which I leave at home, if the purse goes its only cash and not the whole rigmarole of cancelled cards and renewing health cards etc etc

Re: madinat...warning...
I know of a reputable freight forwarder who had twelve HP notebook computers stolen from their van whilst parked for 30 minutes while the driver was going through the customs procedures at Jebel Ali Free Zone last week.

Re: madinat...warning...
I've just had my company induction this morning, they recommend we don't go to any of the souks after 10pm as there is a lot of crime.

Crime is not especially high around the old souks, but it can get very busy so it is sensible to be careful with your wallet or bag.
Any other pearls of wisdom?
