BigTaff, try the Buddah Bar or The Rooftop Bar at the Madinat although NYE most places are ticket only.
Other places for a nice drink are Left Bank, the madinat 1 or the Souk al Bahar in Old Town.
Jambase can be nice although it is a bit hit and miss. Apparently Nelson bar is a good 'pubby' bar and they do good food..I haven't been there but friends say it is nice. I can't remember the name of the hotel it is in but I am sure somebody will tell you, it is near the MOE.
The Belgian Beer Bar is opening soon in Grand Millennium Hotel in Al Barsha, another nice place.
Enjoy

No, I do not wear football shirts - at any point in fact! Although I do wear Rugby shirts casually but not whilst out drinking (unless Wales are playing and I'm watching it in the pub)!
I'm new to Dubai so yes, do need to get out more. I just want a reasonably priced beer and somewhere to sit and talk to meet and get to know people. I don't really want somewhere playing piano music over the sound system and over priced beer because its the "cool place to be".
Any suggestions will be happily accepted of course!! Unfortunately I have only what people tell me to go on currently. I haven't been to Barasti so wouldn't know if its good or not, same re spice island and until now I have only heard good things. I guess for you to know its crap means you have been there at least once yourself. Either that or you are going on what people say, just like me.
Cheers for the input and will let you know my findings as it seems everywhere, including spice island, is fully booked for Xmas dinner but they have fitted me in so I'm glad I've got somewhere to go at least

My advice is to go to Spice Island and make your mind up, go to Barasti's etc..
then you will know and have your own views on these places.
Barasti's is a ****ing rat hole though BTW

we all have different opinions on what is a 'cool' place to go. This has been learned by trial and error. Most of us have been here long enough to have sampled a fair share of whats on offer.

You could always try the dreaded quiz night at Legends on a Monday and meet some of the posters on here....if it's still happening that is.
