Re: housing paid?
Well having stayed on the outside I thought that was a great debate, its smashing if people can stay out of debt but people do not always go into debt to fund a life style, peoples savings do not always cover emergencies, if my partners company were not giving us an interest free loan to cover the 12months rent then we would be going into debt before we got out there as what savings we have will give us our first month out there which there will of course be no income till end of month, also furniture etc its a catch 22 regarding rent costs etc, as long as willing are prepared to pay it then costs will keep rising, I don't know anywhere else that asks for 12 months upfront other than the UAE.
This forum has certainly opened my eyes, and as for my partner he says he could live quite happily on his salary if I stayed at home! Well that could well be the end of a happy relationship if he continues with that attitude,(LOL) I only wish we could sell up here altogether and then release some equity but circumstances do not allow, and then of course we wonder how good his wifes solicitor is and what she negotiates with the courts, all good fun!

pmsl...post of the day
The best things in life are free like the comfort and companionship of good and true friends, like a sunny climate- which in turn makes everyone happier and extends life.I value these most-the latter being the reason why I settled in UAE.

I'm genuinely interested in discovering *why* some people become so uncomfortable with home truths about the reality of life here. I think it's got a lot to do with the "expat bubble" effect - after all, nobody likes having their bubble burst. I am not uncomfortable at all with these 'home truths' as you put them. They are not a 'home truth' to me im afraid. I alone cannot change the economic state here. As long as my family and friends are ok, thats fine by me. Im too busy earning a living to change the world.
And good for you But unfortunately, you've just demonstrated one of the things I unreservedly loathe about Dubai - the "money money money, me me me" attitude that pervades everything. It's sadly become commonplace in the UK too. That is life im afraid. I had a shit job, shit life really so i did something about it. Some people are great debaters (i.e all talk and no trousers) and some people are maybe less articulate but get off their arsehole and do something about it. you it seems are the former, and i am the latter. Thems the breaks
So we just pretend there are no problems and everything's rosy? Take the "I'm all right Jack" approach? Because that's absolutely *guaranteed* to ensure that nothing changes for the better. Nothing you can do will change anything. Things are rosy in my garden. and yes i take the Im alright Jack approach. You are an expat living a decent life and are still not happy it seems. Things for me did change for the better. I wasnt happy with my deal so i sorted it out..its called doing ,not droaning on about it (you call it debating)
ps, why dont you change jobs? you are obviously a professional.....

Re: housing paid?
Most, if not all banks out here have extremely aggressive retail lending policies - banks allow a DBR of 60% and permit loans @ 45-55 salary multiples. Although the Central Bank has a cap of AED 250,000 on personal loans - this is blatantly disregarded and the CB have never censured any bank for flouting their norms. Expats used to be considered 'high' risk some years back, not any more. Banks are now targetting expats too.....
Mashreq, RAKBANK, UNB, FGB etc are making huge profits from their Retail Loan Operations and Credit Cards. Have you seen their adverts - loans are basically being sold to finance expensive lifestyles...extremely irresponsible of banks. "Why wait to go on a holiday - take a personal loan now and go on your dream vacation" or pictures of people on shopping sprees, bags laden with banded goods and happily waving their credit cards....
At my previous bank, I have seen people wait for hours just to get a temp overdraft/salary advance approved, a couple of hundred dirhams just to be able to pay for petrol/utilities and yet they had auto loans for luxury cars they could ill afford, maxed out cards .. etc
