Housemaid Rules
We need a part-time maid but cannot afford the Dhs10,000 plus required for sponsorship. Several applicants have indicated that they have "housemaid visas" while others are on "husband's visas" or "transferable visas". Does anybody know the procedure and likely cost to employ somebody on any of these latter type visas? Another option is cost sharing with another family, but that is presumably illegal. Mind you, if we all obeyed all of the silly bureaucratic rules and regulations here, nothing would ever get done.

Re: Housemaid Rules
we have hired one through an agency. 25AED per hour. 4 days a week, 4 hours per day. The same person always.
We found it safer, legal and cheaper in the long run as opposed to sponsorship.

It isn't that simple anymore! You have to sponsor anyone who works for you or go through an agency. However, many still have part time maids without sponsoring but the fine if you get caught is now 50 000 Dhs and possibly prison/deportation. In my opinion it's simply not worth the risk.

But what would happen if you didnt have the 50,000kdhs?
And had credit card debt....surely they would just have to deport you and you wouldnt have to pay a fine?

Re: Housemaid Rules
of course not, but your 'then you would be stuck in prison here for ever' is a bit OTT..
mind you, its only rapists and murderers that get pardons, not some poor informed lady who didnt realise she was illegally employing a maid...stone her!!
get a grip

it's true AA, trust me. You go to jail for an outstanding debt, well then you may get 4 years, 5, whatever but the debt isn't squashed because you have done your time, it isn't squashed until you have paid it all off. It is a vicious circle that many people can't get out of. Unless you get a Royal pardon during Ramadan you can be in there indefinately. I knew one guy who was in AD Jail for 11 years before getting a pardon to leave.
