Bonjour...
If they lied or deliberately deceived you as to circumstances, that is another matter and you need to negotiate that with them. I do feel strongly that unless there has been serious wrong on the part of your employers, you should be including them in your considerations. |

If you metion the type of work you do somebody on here may point you in the right direction! You might have mentioned it in an old thread but worth repeating
Yeah I.T. is my game, but what I was interviewed and tested on before coming out here is something rather less tricky than what i'm being asked to 'specialise' in in practice. Not sure whether to show my hand or not or to quietly research other options in the hope that things improve a little. Guess it's always a risk coming to a new job without it being 5000 miles away :) |

My opinion is that if you do decide to leave, and the "technical things" don't represent a clear breach of contract, then you are under a moral (if not legal) obligation to compensate your employers for the expense of recruiting you and bringing you here.

Quite clearly, the fact that one has been recruited for a permanent position 4000 miles away involved a judgment from both parties. I believe it is a fantastic opportunity. The employer through interviewing and recruitment processes presumes that I bring a depth of quality and good character to the position at all levels. Given that both of these are true, it makes having to take advice in the first place on my possible ‘apprehensions’ an indication as to my high regard for the company who have invested thousands of pounds getting me here...I of course have uprooted myself from my UK life and also made an investment in the company.
The way this part of the world works it may be that, assuming your position is quite senior, you could hire someone lower level to do that work (eg if they are expecting you to use a programming langauge you're not 100% au fait with). I know people that "administer" websites that can't write a single html tag, but they have a team of lower-paid people working under them who do the actual hands on work. It seems a shame with respect, investment and commitment on both sides that you couldn't resolve this. |
