don't worry about it. Dubai is very liberal and most laws are not strictly enforced on European expats.
Also Sharia punishments do not apply to non-muslims in Dubai.

I just thought thats its sometimes best to get info from people who are already in Dubai, rather than just doing multiple searches.

an egate card is an ID card which gets you through the airport quicker, there is an e gate, swipe your card and your in, no long passport queues. You can't get one until your a resident here though.

Criteria and Documents for eGate Card
New eGate card holder’s presence
Original passport (with at least 6 month’s validity).
You must either be a UAE citizen or an expatriate holding a resident visa.
Passport photograph
Procedure and Fee
Submit documents and do a finger-print ID. This procedure takes only about 5-10 minutes. Pay AED 200 per card.
Validity of CardThe eGate Card is valid for two years. A similar procedure and fees are required for renewal.
New eGate card holder’s presence
Original passport (with at least 6 month’s validity).
You must either be a UAE citizen or an expatriate holding a resident visa.
Passport photograph
Procedure and Fee
Submit documents and do a finger-print ID. This procedure takes only about 5-10 minutes. Pay AED 200 per card.

is this true? I am moving to Dubai on Thursday, what should I expect when I arrive?
Oh and as for reading material, I know I cant have FHM etc etc with girls in lingerie or whatever, but what about books? books with say swearing in or whatever? I'm reading the autobiography of Johnny Rotten from teh sex pistols, will they take that off me??
Is there anywhere Ic an find out what I can and can't bring with me anywhere? a governement site or anything?
