This is getting serious, maybe time to repatriate, if you can find an available Qatar Airways seat :(

Oi I'm getting worried. Supposed to fly to Dubai this weekend!

Living here makes me feel like a hypocrite.

There was a bit of blustering around this but nothing huge (I rarely read regional press)...but even so.... to cut ties abruptly seems quite extreme?

Expat whispers it's a forerunner to a coup to remove the head sheikh. He's always been more sympathetic to the fundamentalists. Father could be behind it.

Talking of Expat whispers, when will the 3yr old rumour of a death in AD resurface? Surely soon before Eid....

:rofl: Well it is that time of year after all!

Talking to my Iranian colleague he says it all kicked off after this supposed twitter hack last week and that the Q8 Emir has been hauling himself round the GCC trying to get everyone to calm down and singing 'can't just we be friends' repeatedly. Apparently his voice is not so good though and so its all gone tits up.

Pretty extreme though.

Emirates and Etihad must be smiling a wry smile.

I believe Bahrain is going a step further and ordering Qatari nationals to leave within two weeks.

Surely something going on behind the scenes than just some "hack" (that's what those called out always say).

No road links - tantamount to a quasi-blockade. Qataris will feel this.

It's not a rumour anymore. Two posters here heard it at the highest levels of government that it happened 2 years ago.

I heard they are waiting to announce it when Eid falls in winter. So in around 10 years time.

The FBI is helping Qatar investigate the source of an alleged "hack" of state media which sparked diplomatic tensions in the Gulf. American support was requested and a team sent which has been in Doha since last Friday, working with Qatar's interior ministry

Al-Hayat reports Qatari nationals have been expelled from Saudi Arabia and have two weeks to leave, but those on pilgrimage will be allowed to continue "despite Doha's behaviour."

Flight to where? Out of the GCC then the chances are good. Into the GCC then who knows. Are the air and sea port bans immediate or 2 weeks as well. If immediate and coming into the GCC then that answers your question.

I'd maybe ring them up ASAP as flight in and out are likely to sky rocket.

Do you have an exit visa?

Re: Four countries cut links with Qatar over 'terrorism' support

Qatar has no FIR (essentially airspace), it's basically all handled by Bahrain. Adjoining FIR's are Saudi and UAE. If flights are denied access to Doha by the controlling FIR states then it would seem to be game over. There might be other factors affecting this as well but a point to consider nonetheless.

BBC just announced that all flights to/from Qatar with Emirates, Etihad, Saudi and Gulf air are now cancelled.

Not quite, the FIRs potentially affecting Qatar are called Emirates(UAE), Bahrain and Tehran. They don't follow national boundaries and are usually straight lines.

To / from Dubai.

Weekend is gone. I've come to terms with it. I have free exit visas (no need for employer permission so I can come and go without them knowing, if needed).

Have a flight booked to China on the 24th.

Will there be any issues regarding the airspace?

Indeed. But Qatar is totally enclosed by the FIR's of other states. Forgot about Tehran though

So the only way Qatar flights can fly into/out of Qatar is through Iranian airspace?

So if needed, I can still get out of the country back to UK or elsewhere?

The fear scenarios are going through the mind. I don't doubt company would let me work remotely from UK if needed. I have a cat, however. Won't leave it behind.

Weird to think we're in a siege. I used to wonder what it was like to be besieged in one of those old cities of yore. Guess I'm going to find out ;)

But it does make one realise how crippling it would be to Qatar's economy. They can't let this last more than a few days. It'll probably all be resolved by Sunday. Just long enough to ruin the weekend.

apparently some airspace has been closed according to the whiners on pprune.

Good points. Hard to miss when you figure how vulnerable this place is just how quickly they will need to fix it. Lots of vested interests from outside the region too who will be pushing to get it sorted.

It might well be more than just a storm in a teacup but hard to figure it will become a total shitfest.

According to the BBC www, the biggest problem for Qatar could be Egypt...an estimated 180,000 Egyptians work in Qatar. If Egypt makes them leave then Qatar could sink pretty quickly.

Everything said on here has confirmed Qatar can't withstand this isolation long. A few weeks at the most.

mission Jun 4th 2017 8:50 pm

Re: Four countries cut links with Qatar over 'terrorism' support

as per the press release this is all due to (apparently) Qatar supporting 'extremism' within the region...what a load of BS....Its a happily anti iranian move. Iran is surrounded by its enemies along the persian gulf with some support from Qatar. Weakening Qatar gives a lot more mobility in the Persian Gulf. More than weaken mobility, its about weakening mutual obligations of security from the neighboring UAE and KSA

More to the point, will Bein Sports not be available here?

Interesting to note too, that a State can ORDER it's citizens to leave another Country, I wonder what would happen if the Qatari sponsors said no, we're not processing any requests. The Egyptians (in this case), would be held to ransom.
