so by fleeing, i'm guessing you mean, pack it all in a suitcase, head to the airport and gone?
all my sympathy to those who've found themselves in that situation, i hope they can find a better future wherever they land.

me and mrs spugsy were talking about this, one girl she works with has absconded, left her car at the airport and she owes the company about 6 months housing allowance, plus, and I'm not sure but I'd put my life on it, she will have had a credit card from over here maxed up.

I think there is an awful lot of scaremongering and rumour that is blowing things way out of proportion. Yes, times are a bit tough, yes, some people are losing their jobs and yes, some people are ditching everything and running. But this happens all the time. I think the press have a lot to answer for in ‘bigging up’ the global recession and if everyone made a concerted effort to sit tight, work hard and ride it out then we’d all be a lot better off.
I think my company have a very sensible approach. Set realistic short term targets of just making enough money to pay everyone’s salary for 3 months and then reassess and cut unnecessary expenditure just in case. They also held back the usual Christmas bonus which will be used to pay salaries if we get into trouble and if we don’t come April, then we’ll get the bonus anyway. (I’d rather have a job than an unplanned for bonus). Work smart, work hard and milk every angle and piece of information you have for all it’s worth. The good and the dedicated will survive.
Those that knee-jerk sack people have to pay now for all the severance costs, then in a while when things have calmed down and we all realize that the press were talking balderdash and things are looking up, they will have to pay all over again to re-hire them. Feast and famine!
Let’s just all calm down, stop letting rumour and scaremongering keep us up at night and all get our heads down to do some work.

I don't know anyone that has, or have heard reliable stories about any...
I do see however people moving into the new compounds in my neighbourhood, and new kids coming into my kids school...

Just to recap..
'Times are a bit tough' - a bit, meaning the world is in the crapper for a couple of trillion US$?
'This happens all the time' - we are facing the worst recession in 50 or more years.
'Sit tight, work hard' - How do you do that, when companies don't buy your materials because they have no work and those that have bought can't afford to pay you because they haven't been paid?
'Setting realistic short term targets' - and if those realistic targets don't get reached?
'They also held back the Christmas bonus' - I think you perhaps should start to smell the coffee at this point.
'After a while when things have calmed down' - is that 3 months, a year, or 5 years?
'The press have been talking balderdash' - sure, 100+ year old banks have gone bankrupt just for a bit of a laugh.. its just a joke really.
Let me guess. Your a real estate agent?

Indeed, some of the major retailers have also gone into receivership in the last month, nah there's no recession.
