finally in Dubai
We arrived on Tuesday morning and have since been able to hire a car and find a furnished apartment.....Thanks to all the postings on this site we got a head start.
We are keen to meet up and would appreciate either PM's or an idea as to where you fine folk hang out to get into the social scene.
We are a young family with a 3.5 year old daughter.
Tomorrow the job search begins so wish us luck.

In my own experience I got no interviews through agencies. I quickly realised that if I wanted a job in the industries I wanted to work in then I'd need to make my own contacts. Did a lot of research and cold calling / emailing companies etc. Scanning Gulf News everyday etc.
I got a lot more interviews through getting in touch with people directly.
I ended up getting my job through an ad in Gulf News, however by this point I had built up my local market knowledge a lot through research and contacting people direct that I knew a lot more local knowledge and this helped land the job...
Basically - DON'T rely on agencies - they are not working for you, they are working for their clients! Some agencies seem fine and I'm sure they may help many people find work, but not in my experience...
Good luck though - it'll happen I'm sure!
Cheers,
Auto.

Hi Monsoon....
....and welcome!
Cargo - I would have thought that the logical place for your hubby would be something to do with the new airport at Jebel Ali - set to become the main cargo hub for the ME. Would suggest he contact all the big boys (DHL, FedEx etc) and also some of the local companies (Aramex etc) just to see if he can find an 'in'. Trqde mags and general 'about Dubai' mags will yeild names of senior ppl that can be written to or tracked down.
Banking - very slightly more tricky, as the banks are all going through an Emiritisation phase....do you have sufficient qualifications perhaps to teach in one of the Higher Colleges or something like that, if you can't find a job in banking/IT?
I agree with the others, DON'T rely on agencies, and if you do fax your CV, call three times a day, insist on meetings and hassle the h**l out of them till they're so fed up with you that they find you something! Much work here is found by chance meetings and friends of friends etc.
One more thought - there's a locally run website called expatwoman.com They host lots and lots and lots of events, and you'd be amazed how many new ppl there are right now, so to get yourself onto the social scene it would be very helpful, without committing you to huge overhead by way of club fees etc.
Best of luck, and hope this helps!

Wish you all the best.. very brave.. the only thing I can add is that you should concentrate on building friendships as most jobs are found that way.. generally ppl create a position for the person rather than find a person for a position..
about your hubby.. try the large oil and gas construction companies, these have their own logistics departments like Halliburton KBR, Bechtel, Technip, Amec, most of them have their regional HQ in Dubai.
Best of Luck
