Re: Experience for Dubai

Science,
At 20 years of age, you'll never get an HSE Managers job in Construction.
The larger Contractors are willing to employ younger inexperienced guys from a western background with a view to promoting from within, although it will be on a lower salary grade than the HSE Manager (as you'd expect).
It can be done, you've just got to be willing to get your foot in the door and get a bit of experience under your belt - there aren't many better places for large Projects than out here. So long as you can obtain a package that allows you to live reasonably well, you'll quickly gain v. good experience, knowledge and your terms and conditions will improve.

I know this isn't related to construction but instead of creating a new thread about experience required for Dubai jobs, i'll put it here.

Sorry to generalise but would you all recommend that if I were to graduate, I should first get some work experience in England before looking at Dubai? (If it helps, i'm hoping to work in Management Consultancy/Project Management)

Also considering that the starting salary I am not too fussed about or accommodation provision offered by any of the employers.

Thanks.

Absolutely - the first thing they always look for is experience:)

you need to be fussed about accomodation provision and salary...Dubai is far from cheap, as i'm sure you've read on here...

Absolutely, second that - first choice should be multinationals or the very large business groups. Family owned businesses (UAE/Indian owned small and medium sized companies are best avoided as they lack professionalism though some well known ones - e.g. Futtaim I guess are okay)!

Thanks for the replies.

So i'm guessing unless I can find a graduate entry job with a big company, it is not worth coming out to Dubai until I get some experience in England.

@ Madam Medusa, i'm not expecting too much for starting salaries out there, just enough to pay the utilities, food etc as i'll be sorted for accommodation.

if you don't get what you want and need when you arrive you won't get it later. I assume you have family here hence the housing allowance issue, why not still get it and spend it

I agree. :D

Getting experience in the UK does make a lot of sense. I was under the impression that I could get my foot in the door by working for some firms in Dubai which would then make it easier to get other jobs there but didn't take into account the visa/contract issues.

Thanks for the help people. It all adds to my research.
