Slightly off topic, is there many places to use the internet in Dubai? I will not have access for my first week and ideally would like to be able to keep up with the enails I recieve.

Free wifi in just about any coffeeplace, malls etc

Starbucks all over the place have free access, even when they are closed they seem to keep on the signal!
