Emiratization
Yet another glorious example of why it wont and doesnt work
Emirati taxi driver campaign 'a complete failure'
"Plans to recruit Emiratis as taxi drivers in Sharjah has been a total failure, with just one national applying for a job in five years, according to a senior transport official."
"Al Shamsi said that since the SPTC launched the Emiratisation process among taxi drivers almost five years ago, only one national had enquired about a position as a driver.
“He called in the evening saying that he wanted a job as a driver, and in the morning, we called him back – he said he didn’t want the job anymore,” Al Shamsi said.
We asked him why and if he had got another job – he said he was a national and was content to remain unemployed if he didn’t get a decent job as a national.”

Jeez,
Tough job for someone, but the only way Emiratization is going to succeed-IMHO- is with a complete re-education (in the class room if need be) of
mindset and attitude in regard to work ethic and classcist arrogance.
I know there is a generation of Nationals with growing debt and no oil trees,
I don't know how to link this generation to the concept of 'earning a living'
and overcoming the rather pricey commodity of pride.

Re: Emiratization
I read this today too. Surely it can't have been a surprise to anyone that there weren't queues of nationals wanting to take up this fantastic job offer.....

Re: Emiratization
Should have advertised for Customer Mobilization Manager rather than taxi driver... so long as manager is in the title, they want it. But then again, they won't want the taxi driver $$$

I think emiritisation is just lip service to keep the locals happy with their leaders.

Re: Emiratization
Saudi Arabia tried the taxi driver thing years ago but no one, especially women, local and foreign, would use them.
The taxi firms got around the law by painting their cars white and renaming them limousines.
It still cracks me up hearing of people getting a "limo" into town. Brings to mind stretched Lincolns not tatty Toyota's
We've trained over 20 local guys to be fully qualified welders able to work anywhere in the world and, to a man,
they quit and took either office jobs or as runabouts for oil companies.
Several told me they would be ashamed if their friends saw them in overalls! They would turn up in their thobes and change in the cars.
Welding is obviously not an honorable profession

Re: Emiratization
There are so many positions staffed by nationals that were completely expat just ten years ago.
Within fifteen-twenty years , they will have Emiratized the majority of all positions. And we will be surplus to requirements.

Re: Emiratization
I hope they're good at multi-tasking. 700,000 Emiratis doing the current jobload of 3.5 million or something? If it was the other way round I could see it!

Re: Emiratization
I thought Seven Seas meant western expats jobs. They will still have cheap labour - the 3,000,000 number. Those 500,000 good jobs will be Emirated.
