Default Computer problem

I have an Acer laptop and the touch pad doesn't work any more and I have to use a mouse now. Is there anyone in Abu Dhabi who can help or knows anyone who can fix it? Please don't give computer shops, I need a sensible person who understands english. Guarantee ran out last year, typical.

There's a good little computer shop on Salam street.

If you're up for it yourself, it's easy enough to replace. Find the part online for a few bucks and ten minutes with a screw driver and you're good to go, should be plenty of guides on how to dismantle the laptop via youtube...Just a thought.

Check first that it's not just a driver issue:

start>control panel>devices and printers>device manager>mice and other pointing devices>acer touchpad, then right click for options.

Check for an exclamation mark and read any error message
Try disabling then enabling the touchpad
Try updating the driver.

Worth a go.

Have gone through all options on the control panel, disabling and enabling touch pad to no avail. There is nothing else wrong with the laptop, and leads me to believe it is the touch pad itself hat needs replacing. Have seen sites showing how to take apart and replace, but don't have enough courage to try something like that. I was hoping that there would be some samarion somewhere who wants to show off heir knowhow, and it woud be so much appreciated.
I know there are short cuts specific to each laptop. Does anyone know the shortcut to disable the touchpad for an Acer. Perhaps this might work just in case I accidentaly disabled it, if anything, I will certainly know what not to do in future.
Thank you all, really appreciated. This is the last resort now.

Dear UKCityGent,
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I don't have to throw it out after all. Tried function and F7 simultaneously, didn't work, tried one after the other and it leaped into action. How can I thank you?
I was desperate, am not a computer head, and again I thank you.

Don't worry, your XP era stuff will be backwards-compatible with Win 8

Yep...you probably won't be able to use the additional go-faster features from Win 8, that's all.
