Re: Compact SUV 4x4
How does the Xterra compare to the Fortuner? I had been thinking an Xterra will be the replacement for mine when it comes.
Is the Xterra quicker than the Fortuner 4l off the line (which also goes like the stink) |

Several years ago, I bought a 2 year old Jeep Wrangler 4.0 from a guy who was leaving. I took it on a Test Drive and he came with me, telling me that the first time he drove this thing it gave him a 'Hardon!' I can only say, that if he got a 'Hardon' I got Premature Ejaculation! - 200 BHP and a Manual Box! Like so many other cars, they are just not made any more! I bought it, and ran it until it dropped! - Well, it didn't exactly drop, it was sent to Afghanistan, so I got a backhanded refund! - Great Car, and I will never forget it! - Just the same as my first Toyota Corrolla (Aquatic Version) that made it through Sharjah in 1997! - That was the year when Dubai and Sharjah were cut-off for nearly two weeks, due to rain! - But the Corrolla floated through! |

Ok back from a morning road test in the Xterra and as promised a review against the Pathfinder
Xterra and Pathfinder are both mid option versions at 10.3k BHD and 12K bhd respectively So, if it was for YOU, would you have gone for the Pathfinder then, but as its for the missus and you dont want it marked up, its the Xterra.:D ?? |

Thanks for the review tockalosh, as mentioned I was seriously looking at a PFinder, but think the Xterra is a better buy.
BUT - after reading comments and points on the 'Moving to Riyadh' thread, I remembered with fondness driving an old beat up Pajero I had in Jeddah. An old car that you don't care about too much, is perhaps more appropriate here in KSA. I think I'll sell the Beemer and start looking for an old Suburban....:D Surburbans or the rare GMC Yukon XL with the 2-2-3 seat arrangement ( 2 rows of captains chairs was a relatively rare option) is just one of my favourite cars. Plenty in Bahrain with reasonable mileage but with one2 year old and baby due imminently, my Mrs wants something reliable. On my own with 40k SAR to blow, it would be a burban |

Yes my dislike of Pajeros is well known and the Pajero sport which we had as a hire car for 2 weeks was the biggest pile of shite I have ever driven.

Good evening
I am new to the forum and currently am in Saudi (just moved in about a couple of months). I am looking to buy a new SUV 4x4; but one of my requirements is safety airbags (screens) for the rer passengers. On going to the various dealers here that part from the top end SUVs; the others do not have it. Further the top end compact SUVs (Prado V6/Nissan Pathfinder LX) are not in stock ( iam at Dhahran). The Mitubishi Pajero is available and seems great value for money (with all the whistles and bells). However cursory look, it does not seem a very popular SUV despite its pedigree? Any suggestions from forum on why this is so and also suggestions on what to buy ( I am not a great fan of the GMCs; reliability issues) Thanks Let me know what you think |
Re: Compact SUV 4x4
For on-road regular driving and the option for off-road I would go with:
Xterra : good for off-roading, nice ride, enough oomph when you need it Pathfinders : off-road version is great Pajero - 3.8 SWB : not bad for off-roading and has decent capabilities but there will be issues with damaged bumpers! FJ : wouldnt be my choice, but they sure can shift in the sand Explorer : heavy, clunky, LWB, bumper issues, but has the power, just needs confident handling off-road. On-road, its like driving your sofa around! Very comfy...but..... VW's, Cayennes, Volvo, BMW are not true off-roaders. They are fine for a gentle poddle into the sand, but you need to ensure that you have adequate recovery points (front and back). I drive a 2 door Jeep Wrangler which I love, but it wont meet the rest of your criteria. |
Re: Compact SUV 4x4
Wonder what the OP puchased in the end.
Couldnt bring myself to buy the Xterra in the end as the Landrover Gene in me was just too strong so we pick up our 2 year old Range Rover a week tomorrow. Bring on those repair bills :-( but where else can you can enjoy running a V8 Rangey and nothing else has the class even the gorgeous AMG G wagons. Original budget went out of the window mind |

From my experience I think the best option is a VW Touareg but if you are looking for a smaller version then you can always choose to go for a VW Tiguan. They have the best air bag system for front as well as rear passengers.
Let me know what you think The VW Tiguan is great - haven't had any problems with mine. |

Original budget went out of the window mind You're not going to be able to justify driving something that drinks petrol like a V8 anywhere else in the world so why not? My Touareg averages 21liter/100km which wouldn't be sustainable in the UK that's for sure... |
