Default Car/Portable GPS

Hello all you lovely people!

I am looking at buying a portable satnav system that I can use here (although I would imagine it's worse than useless with the everchanging road system), but also in UK/Europe. I thought about the following: http://www.medion.de/md96240/uk/flash.html, as you can carry it in your pocket, attach it to your zimmer, shopping trolley, stolen capri etc.. . However, it does not say if you can download Middle East maps.
Anyone have any experience in these matters?
Following a very late night gathering in the depths of Barsha, and stumbling aimlessly thinking I was pointing towards the SZR, 3 hrs later finding myself in Al Ain, I feel pocket assistance may be usefull finding my way home!

They have some decent ones in Sharaf DG (Times Square) with Middle East maps, Garmin were going for about 1500dh.

I'm afraid my GPS is over 5 years old & very primitive compared to the nifty little things you can buy today. But even without maps of the UAE, I have the co-ordinates of my home (& various camp-sites, landmarks & places that do a nice line in colonic irrigation) programmed in - and it's very easy to find them.

Just to confuse matters, instead of buying a pure-bred GPS transciever, you might also want to look at pocket pcs, pdas or even the new intel UMPC which come with GPS built in, and can double as a pda, mobile phone or even a device to contact yr mates on british expats the next time that you're pi**ed, lost and desperate to get home!!!

I have a software product called Route 66. This runs on my windows mobile based PDA. It is actually pretty good.

Thanks!
Might wait for the new Nokia Communicator, which has built in GPS.
