Yes I agree, but I wonder how many people reading this are kicking themselves for not renewing their passport on their last visit. I didn't know about the service until someone told me and I too was initially skeptical.

Hi Marshi, I am in the same position. Sent my passport off 6weeks ago, was suppose to be flying out tonight! Every time I call all they say is it is "awaiting examination". I have made a complaint which means some one from the liverpool office has to review my case and contact me within 3 (uk) working days... I honestly believe it is quicker to DHL to a family member in the UK and apply from within, apparently that turn around time is a lot quicker.

Apparently, DHLing a passport to a family member for renewal is illegal. I had intended to do that.

The story I was told is that its a security thing, although I don't believe it for a minute, in that they didn't want to be sending blank passports across the world because if they fell into the wrong hands etc etc.

Workmate is Italian. Had his renewed in the Italian Embassy in Dubai 3 months ago in 20 minutes from walking through the door to walking out again. Hhhmmm. Does anyone know what the British Embassy actually does for their day job?

Doing it that way meant sending blank passports around the world. Nobody thought it was much of a security risk until a shipment of 3000 blank passports destined for embassies was stolen in transit near Manchester in 2008.
Logic suggests that if blank passports have a value to criminals, then minimising their movement would make sense. In addition to that, centralising all passport administration in the UK is probably cheaper than increasing the security of shipments around the world.

Security threats only for UK???? very interesting that happened near Manchester and not any where in Middle East. It could happen to those blank passports from London to Liverpool couldn't it?
