Art & Customs
At the risk of sounding like a pompous w*nker, I am wondering about getting my artwork over to the UAE, given the strict decency laws that I have heard about. I have a few paintings and prints that I know full well would probably get me in a bit of trouble and plan to re-home them, but I am wondering about the others, and just how strict the Customs people are.
For anybody familiar with the work of Ritchie Fahey, I have two prints of his that I am hoping to get shipped over, one of a girl in a see-through nightie with a gun in her hand (can't remember the name), and the other called 'The Getaway Driver' which features a girl taking off her jumper.
As they are not explicitly pornographic, do you think I will be alright? I would hate to lose them, but equally I don't want to leave them in London.
I also have a Banksy screen print ('Bomb Hugger') featuring a girl holding a bomb, which I am worried for different reasons.
Thanks,
Sam x

Thanks guys. I think I shall have to resign myself to leaving them in London.
Incidentally, I was quite disturbed by how much of my art (and some books) could be regarded as semi-pornographic. It's amazing how moving to a different country makes you view things in a different way.

the stupid thing is, it will probably be ok...depends on the mood of the customs guy on the day...

Anyways - it is tricky to know what is ok and what is not. Also - something maybe ok for someone and not for someone else. This can be called "wasta".
I'd think this one would be just about ok:-
I work in an industry that requires things to be cleared by the Ministry... and things do get cleared....
I would think most of your art would be fine - Banksy no problem - I released Paradise Now and it was fine. However - as MM said - if you are worried - be careful.

Re: Art & Customs
The picture you have just posted is from 'The Getaway Driver' which is one of the prints I have and was worried about. Do you think this would be OK?
And do you mean "Paradise Now" the film? Blimey. I thought all things Israeli were outlawed here.
What industry you in?

Movies and before that Music.
Paradise Now is a Palestinian film financed by Israeli and other backers. How cool is that.
The image I posted I would think is ok. In movies the thing that seems to be the main concern is nudity - I mean genital nudity - male homosexual anything is a huge problem, lesbians are welcomed with open arms, just the blokes are a problem - violence is just fine - drugs, no real issue - even other religions are tolerated - male bottoms are the worst thing in the world to see it seems....

Paradise Now is a brilliant movie - if I'm not mistaken they showed it as part of the Dubai Film Fest the year before last....
Divine Intervention is another great Palesinian movie... the opening scene of a guy dressed as Santa Claus being persued by stone hurling youths is wonderfully surreal.....

Re: Art & Customs
It is a brilliant movie and I'm really happy that it has given Hany Abu-Assad (the director) a really huge boost - his next picture called The Vanishing has Nicolas Cage attached!
I'll check out Divine Inspiration - we're trying to pick up more movies that challenge - we released Road To Guantanamo and have just got Extraordinary Rendition (not the Hollywood one) and from independant English language Factory Girl, Lives Of Others, Apocalypto and Wong Kar Wai's My Blueberry Nights...
anyways....
