Things I like about Doha, 2 years in:
Booming economy with mega infrastructure plans Insane growth 20% GDP p.a. Decent work opportunities in construction Technical capability is highly valued Minimal HR bloat/ MBA types bouncing around Safe and secure Everyone works, no welfare scroungers Totally tax-free Cheap petrol (almost free) Short commute to work Decent work-life balance Good International airport, with an easy hop to great holiday destinations Guaranteed sunshine and gorgeous weather for 6 months of the year The Corniche Nice, cheap places to eat out, and generally good food Good on the CV, everyone knows of Qatar and the World Cup 2022 plans. I'll leave it at that for now. [J] Where did you take that from , the Tory Manifesto ? |

Where did you take that from , the Tory Manifesto ? Funnily enough, I now work for similar people in Qatar, however they are truly entitled to neither work nor want, since my former acquaintances in Dundee get screwed day-in-day-out paying extortionate, imported energy prices. Go figure! [J] |

Re: Anyone like Doha??
I go to all the events, you essentially have to be invited by someone. You can join QBBF (I think that's the name) where they have a lunch once a month and they sometimes get invited to embassy. 15 riyals a drink in embassy, burgers for 10.....

Re: Anyone like Doha??
Thanks britexpat. I dont run my own company, so will have to check with the uber bureaucratic HR department in my company to see whether they allow me joining something like this.

Re: Anyone like Doha??
You don't have to run a company for Qatar British Business Forum, you pay a fee.
You generally get invites to the Embassy when you own a company though. |
Re: Anyone like Doha??
britexpat76: Still seems a bit hit and miss. Do embassies have some sort of a criteria to develop guest list? Is this something one should enquire on phone with them?

I moved to Doha from Dubai 8 months ago and we all really love it here. I have my son and daughter here with us, they are in their 20's, both have made many friends and are enjoying life to the full. Boat trips, dune bashing, etc etc... the drivers although erratic are slower than Dubai. Doha is what you make of it, like anywhere in the world. The best move we made was coming here.:)
