I have to say I am pretty impressed with the build finish of the building we are in. There are water sprinklers in every room, smoke alarms and fire safet doors too. There is also a fire distinguisher in the kitchen.

Did offer one of our drivers, who is guilty of the above, to buy him a seat cover to put over the plastic..

Just looked at me strangely and walked away...

Surprised to hear that it is mandatory in all towers now to have smoke detection and sprinklers

I’m not familiar with the protection regulations here but usually in the rest of the world it is roughly like this: For public/commercial/industrial buildings fire fighting measures are required depending on the size, height, function, etc. That’s why you will find sprinklers in most offices. For private/residential building it is usually considered your choice which level of protection you want and there are usually no requirements by the regulations.
But, also as a rough generalization for the rest of the world, the local fire marshal has to approve the fire fighting design as he is the one who has to put out the fire and rescue people in the building.
I think that is why some have no sprinklers in their apartments while others do have it because there’s either a caring developer or fire marshal who is taking is job serious.

1, They've not got as much construction going on yet, the fires will happen
2, Fewer insurance jobs needed as developers are richer :D

you distinguish a kitchen fire by the fact that it started in the kitchen.
Surely everyone knows that...

I'm at the Marina in an Emaar tower and have sprinklers in every room. There is a smoke detector in the kitchen (they must have heard about my cooking) and the building has a VERY LOUD fire alarm system. There are also fire hoses and extinguishers on every floor. I don't see how much more they could do really.

Indeed,

think of it this way too though - if a building went up a killed a given number of higher management expacts and professionals it would not look good at all.

They have to adapt to the modern world. I honestly think some fire precautions are OTT but certainly wouldn't like to be trapped in a bedroom due to fire in the rest of the apartment. Horrible thought. mind you, its the smoke that kills.
