Another tower on fire
One of the newest towers in Dubai Internet City is ablaze. Smoke can be seen billowing from the top of the building, close to the twin towers. The high rise tower, which is still under construction, is at Tecom.

Towers under construction catching fire is bad enough. Can you imagine if a functioning, inhabited tower had a major fire????
It's gonna happen, it's gonna happen.... Have always wondered how would they rescue someone stuck on the top floors in Dubai? Choppers? |

More seriously, they design tower blocks so that emergency egress passages (ie stairwells) are fire-proofed and ventillated. If you can't make it all the way down, then they design in "holding areas" that retard flame & smoke for long enough for emergency relief to reach you. Assuming they've designed it right & built it right, that is... |

No, they'll have a swarm of smurfs on the ground holding very large blankets shouting "Jump, you b*ggers, jump".....

In their hurry to build the towers/cut costs etc, you think they'd worry about such 'minor' details? God willing there will be no fire.... |

So they jump off buildings...If it is their destiny to die that moment, then so be it... |

http://www.gulfnews.com/nation/General/10213143.html Inside the buildings (if they're anything like the UK - which they should be) everything is intumescent - they'll also have mega sprinkler systems in the apartments I'm sure. Have you ever seen a sprinkler system go off?? Its rediculous the amount of water that gets pumped out. often more damage is done here as a result of putting the fire out that the fire itself. I understand the M&E systems over there a pretty s**t hot. |

Re: Another tower on fire
Surprised to hear that it is mandatory in all towers now to have smoke detection and sprinklers

As a Fire Insurance Surveyor among my other duties, it seems to me that the main problem here is not the installations but the training of staff to use and maintain them properly. The number of fire extiguishers I have seen in factories and warehouses still in their original protective wrapping is frankly amazing...just like the sheets protecting car seats... they don't want them to get dirty:frown:
