I was trying to be a little polite but there you go.

OMG read my posts, i certainly dont think that having and money and spending it is all that counts as you have stated. i have gone on and on about the have nots and slave labour and minimum wage and workers rights

I am not British so I don't know what you are referring to...

I am sure that there are people here that are like that, ..just like there are people with normal cars and no maids that are complete tossers...
But just to suggest because you can afford a certain lifestyle you are fake, not real etc...I don't agree with that...that's it really in a nutshell...

and still don't get the accusatory tone regarding the 'getting a 4x4, a maid'...like it's something to be ashamed of, something bad...

It is if you pay your maid anything less than what she deserves rather than 1000 or 1500 dhs

Get someone in Europe to work full time doing manual labour for that amount

ah...but the world doesn't work that way now does it...unless you pay European money when you buy your car here, pay for your 5 star dinner...but you don't do you....you are happy to pay less than back home...as we all are...

Good God, people - why has this discussion taken a huge diversion onto whether you can afford to drive a 4x4 or not!!
The original discussion was about the obnoxious, arrogant "expat brats" who act like they own the place just because they have a lot more money than they are either used to or deserve and think that they are suddenly a cut above all others, especially the less priviledged people who have no choice but to work as maids, petrol pump attendants, labourers etc.
Living a good life and spending your money is not the issue - i'd like to think i do that to the extent i am comfortable with, but am also sufficiently grounded to understand that i am not out to impress anyone.
There are a significant portion of people in Dubai who spend their life doing just that - whether it's brunch at the "in" restaurant, buying the flashiest car they can, being a member of the most expensive beach club etc. etc.
It does seem that a lot of people are quite touchy about this subject - i wonder why?

Hey less of the Northern Town Bashing! :p

I have to say I've not noticed any more pretencious or "fake" people than you do in London or anywhere really in England? And I think that the whole maid issue has to do with the availability of cheap and willing labour rather than trying to show off!

I think most people would have a maid in the UK if the labour market was such that you pay such a rate that both parties are happy - i.e. cheap to the employer and financially viable to the employee. But the economy in the UK has evolved over hundreds of years to the point that there is no longer the large delta that there is over here. In theory as an economy develops the gap between the rich and the poor should converge, but these things take time.

In the meantime just enjoy life!

so you do actually pay more than the actual price of things...and I not referring to tipping here...cause I think that is what we all do regardless
