Hi All - I have an offer to work on the Qiddiya project in Riyadh and in doing my research would love to hear from those living there if my package will be sufficient to cover my expeses. I have contacted schools and compunds to gets some real world figures, however it would be great to see if others thought my other expenses are realistic (ie groceies, TV Subscription) and if I am missing anyting.

We are a family of four (kids 2 and 7) and would love to live in a family friendly compound.

Basic Salary: SAR 62,000/month

Expenses/month:
Rent - 16,600
Groceries - 2000
School Fees - 6,667
Pre School - 2500
Household - 1000
Utilities - 1100
Internet - 400
Mobile - 400
Car Hire - 1500
Annual Holiday - 2000
Home Insurance - 83
Clothing - 1500
TV Subscription - 300
Entertainment/Eating Out - 4000
Misc - 2000
Mortgage back home - 9300

Total Expenses: 51,600 SAR per month

Hey, let's break it down for you.

Basic Salary: SAR 62,000/month

Expenses/month:
Rent - 16,600 - yes this gets you a decend 3 bedroom in a decent compound.
Groceries - 2000 - probably more than this, I would say about 800 per person would cover it
School Fees - 6,667 - don't know, will assume you've done the research
Pre School - 2500 - as above
Household - 1000 - probably correct
Utilities - 1100 - depends on what you agree with the compound, some ask you to pay the utilities yourself, others package it with the rent
Internet - 400 - about right
Mobile - 400 - about right
Car Hire - 1500 - unlikely, should budget at least 1800 for a crappy basic one + petrol c. 200-300 pm depending on commute
Annual Holiday - 2000 - your call
Home Insurance - 83 - presumably for back home, n/a
Clothing - 1500 - about right
TV Subscription - 300 - depends what you get obviously
Entertainment/Eating Out - 4000 - depends how often you do it, a dinner for two is typically about 200-300 with "drinks", add kids at half that, so you'll be set back about 300-400 per dinner, other entertainment will be tickets for e.g. Boulevard, normally 25-50 per person, but you won't go every weekend, I'd say this is probably too high unless you dine out 2-3 times a week in proper restaurants. There isn't THAT much to do and you won't splash out on booze, so I'd say 2000 is more realistic
Misc - 2000 - probably not that much, but makes sense to budget for extra expenditures
Mortgage back home - 9300 - your call

Total Expenses: 51,600 SAR per month

Overall I'd say you have budgeted reasonably well, some things may be less, others more, it really depends on preferences. If you are careful with budgeting and don't go out too often, you may end up spending less than this. Have you budgeted for tickets back home? There were two of us (no kids) and we normally spent about 22k pm on everything (compound apartment, car, groceries/utilities/household, entertainment, clothes, travel, flights home) without worrying about every penny - but of course with no kids and a cheaper apartment.
