i think it depends on the type of person you are as to whether you need to visit first - if we want to make this change we are probably not going to ahve the opportunity to come over - financially - we could only do it during summer hols - not very practical - we are prepared for a COMPLETE change - we are prepared for the heat - which we have experienced before abeit for shorter times - for the censorship over there - the cultural change - as for the kids they are 2 and 4 atm - if we are to make this kind of move now is a better time to do it before they are much older as for them it would be more of a wrnech for them

we see it that we have one life (and trust me the past 2 years this has been proved to us!!!!!!!) and we want to enjoy it - experience things and make the most of our time here - this will be just a first step in doing this. we will never know unless we try.

as for some people not making it over - basically if jason is offered a job then he will be taking it (providing the package is right - although most of the teaching packages are very similar) and we will come over - it is all just a case of him securing a job once that is done then decission is made really!

hawkhead thanks hun youve given us some great info

seriously all the best, and im sure you will do ok. You must understand that this forum does get swamped with airheads wanting insane advice about jobs they have no chance of getting..

Jasonxxx is obviously in a different position given his profession.

if you do happen to bump into Luke and Jo, say hi

Ellie - I think you've got the right mindset and determination and that something will come your way eventually, even if you have to wait for the next academic year. (Sept 2010 I mean, not 2009.)

here you are - xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx!!!!! lmao!

i understand that yes you probably do get some people on here wanted a quick exit to a 'dream' job at a few million a year! but really that isnt us! and certainly not an airhead - lmao!!!! with jasons experience and quals i think he should have a good chance at a job - he has been teaching for 9 years, has his BSc, MSc, PGCE as well as experience in industry and lecturing at a university, not like he has just come out of uni and just gone into teaching

as for luke and jo - unlikley we will bump into them love!

I dont know if a visit here is really that beneficial, ok you get to look around the place and look at the schools, but its all surface at the end of the day.

I came for 3 days, looked at 3 schools, spinneys, the British club, smoked shisha and wondered along the corniche.

You will never know what the place is like until you actually live here, the good and the bad.

I agree, Grace. Even the first month or so it's like being on holiday. It takes a while to scratch beneath the surface.

yeah, but I'd still wouldn't like it if I had to move to a part of the world that I had never been to visit...
was reading the other day about this family with 3 kids, they are moving from Holland to New Zealand without ever having been there, seems like a big thing to be doing...
We were supposed to move to LA a few years ago and I was all for it, but after visiting 2 times and talking to a load of people there, seeing the schools etc, we turned the offer down.

Ellie and Jason ... welcome to UAE. the first and foremost thing - safety and security ... you can go and wander anywhere without any thought you'd be mugged, bullied, attacked for you skin colour, accent or anything like that ... there won't be drunk people on the streets and you can have a walk any time of the day or night without that very known feeling when you find yourself in a dark street in London perhaps ...

you'll find many people complaining on this forum but that's mainly because of expensive education and housing ... as well as this work crisis ... but in general most expats here are a happy crowd and they don't go back unless forced to.

some go back home to have babies ... but there is nothing there that is so much better ... it's just the mind setting ... once you do it here you'll say: 'it's not that bed as I thought'. it's just different. we had one child in yugoslavia, one in australia, one in oman and one in saudi ... yugoslavia being the worst experience ever. so in general the health care is good ...

some say schools are not good ... well you'll be teaching in one so it's to say that you're not good either. schools are as good as anywhere else in the world ... plus no drugs, no gangs, no shootings, no teachers beatings ...

housing may be expensive but you can buy if the price is right and the loan is lower than the rent ... the only issue is to make sure you stay here for a few years. also the governments made some laws to make it easier on tennants and the market appears to be in tennants favour (i would still buy and live in my own not depending on governments / landlords) so you're not coming in the bed time at all. having a secure job solves all problems we have in the uae at the moment.

social life is very good ... if you want to have one. first few months everything will look great, the next few months will be months of ignorance then you'll hate everything and everyone and then after a year or so you'll settle and you'll love it or you'll go home with occasional return to this site and telling everyone how awful life is there in uae...

me ... being to ME 12 years now and love it ... and wouldn't go back unless forced to.

Commander - always the harsh truth please, from reading other threads thats what you give anyway!
Knowing first hand what companies will arrange for you if you let them, we have decided to look around and sort ourselves out, hence all the questions. We have a (bare bones) budget which breaks down like this opbviously all the socialising will be on top! :-

Housing, utilities, internet etc 250,000
Food 50,000
extra vehicle for me (hire) 17,000

School prices we have based on sending the eldest to the British School (looks ok but would really welcome any comments) and we are awaiting responses from humpty dumty and bright beginnings for nursey prices. Again advice would be gratefully recieved.
Are the above estimates realistic, are there other hidden extras that anyone can advise us of.

Again many thanks, its good to know you csn rely on British Expats, we asked a few questions on another expat forum 2 weeks ago without any responses!! Thanks everyone
BSAK is one of the best schools in AD - but there are always waiting lists. It helps that you are British. The Pearl, Al Muna (on the island) and Al Yasmina (35-40 mins out of town) are part of Aldar Academies and tho' quite young schools have built a good reputation. cost approx 39,000 for the coming year. Again, waiting lists could prove difficult. Nurseries are very difficult to get into - good ones that is. Get names onto waiting lists asap. Bright beginnings have two branches and I think stepping stones do too. BB is great. IF you do move I would advise you get your names on waiting list for the British Club too. It's a fantastic facility and is where we take our two boys most weekends. Finding accomodation is a nightmare. it is overpriced and scarce. 200K will get you a two bedroom place - if you can find one. Better to ask the company's PR/HR person to search for you. they may even already have accomodation. AD is not full of the activities, walks, flora and fauna that we are used to in our home countries but it is different, i feel very safe here and we are able to save. The other bonus is you can hire a nanny very cheaply (approx 1000-2000 AED/month). This frees us adults up to spend quality time with each other and the kids without having to deal with mundane housework!

Your nanny does mundane housework? Are you too embarrassed to call her a slave/maid?
