Default Can you support a family on a teacher's wage?

Hi everyone. I'm a secondary school teacher looking at jobs in Dubai and emirates. I would be accompanied by my spouse and 2 children. The going wage seems to be 9-14000 AED per month, with some (not sure how much) contribution towards housing, and school fees for the kids paid.

Is anyone teaching there on a similar wage and trying to support a family?
What is your experience? How have you found it? Is is enough money to live on - I know everyone's expenses vary, but just wondered if all teacher's wages were only really enough to keep a young single happy in shared housing, but were really not sufficient for us older people with families???

Is anyone out there supporting a family on a single teacher's wage? Would love to hear from you....

If you got all your housing paid and the school fees included then I guess you could..it would be tough though..after school activities and stuff of the childthings are no cheap. I guess it depends on what sort of a life you want out here..Good luck anyway.
Scamp's lady is a teacher, so he will have more information for you, I'm sure.

Will you be working for a big group?

Definitely suggest it needs to be 14,000 + housing, then you'll be good to go I think.

Can your partner work?

You're too late to look for European school year September 2013 - June 2014. Almost all schools start again in the next month. You'll need to start looking seriously in December or earlier this year for the following school year.

Hi, I am a teacher, working in Dubai, have been here for 7 years. Some schools will give a housing allowance, it will not be enough to rent a two-bedroomed apartment, possibly not even a one- bedroomed apartment. If they give school accommodation, it will be a one-bedroomed apartment, unless you are SMT.
It would help if your spouse is able to find a job.

On a similar salary in KSA you could get by - just. Most teachers who make a success of it are "double income no kids" (DINKS). The better-off are those in the category DINKOP (Double Income No Kids On Principle)

what do you mean by DINKS? I am going there to teach and I am single with no kids.

I am getting 9000 AED (it is my first year teaching as a new graduate) they provide my housing for me.....do you think I will be able to comfortably live and pay off my osap loans?

I assume that you are of the tribe DINKOP, sweetypie ?
(Double Income No Kids On Principle)

The drones of turbocapitalism.

It may go against your belief system, but there are in fact, great similarities between KSA and UAE !

I will say again

Trying to support a family on a single salary as a teacher - in KSA or UAE or Qatar or Kuwait - is difficult. It is easier if both partners are teaching. If you have school-age children a decent employer will offer free education or at least a hgaeavliy discounted place.
