£29K per annum...how much can I expect to save from that?

Hi All,

Have been offered a classroom teacher position in an international school...salary is £29k. Usual perks...free accom, utilities etc along with this. Can anyone give me an Idea what I can expect to save from this?

Many Thanks.

You will save the balance of what you don't spend.

If you really mean everything is covered (free accom, bills, etc as you suggest), you'll save plenty of that.

Put it the other way round - in the UK, what would you have to earn gross to have 29k left after paying income tax, NI, rent, bills, etc? And would that seem to be a decent salary? Yes.

And before someone jumps in with "Oh, but Dubai's / Abu Dhabi's sooo expensive": its only as expensive as you make it. You could live here more cheaply than in the UK--just depends what you're in to. And exactly as Dean says: GBP 2,400 pcm of entirely disposable income (except for the pension bit)--you'd probably have to be earning the best part of £100k to realise that in the UK.

Sounds like the salary will be about 15K AED a month.

The one big expense you will probably have is a car, if you can or want to drive here. This can cost upwards of 2K AED a month for a Nissan Sunny or the likes. You can live very frugally here, but the obvious problem may be the bright lights and expensive nights out in Dubai/Abu Dhabi.

I live in Al Ain so there is not much to do here, and some months I can get by on as little as 2000 - 2500 AED. I just send the rest of my salary back to the UK when the exchange rate is good. I dont pay for my car though!

If Sharjah then GBP13,250
If Doha then GBP14,500

Fair point, but doesn't much the same go for elsewhere?

Depends - in Saudi isn't it common practice to also get your lunch? My mate there currently spends nothing (car shares to work, eats in the staff canteen, goes to the gym and then wanks himself to sleep).

Are lotions really necessary?

I've never needed to use them.

In Saudi, I think even you would be wanking more than what is considered normal. It's to stop the blisters.

Some sort of lubrication is needed. Spittle will do the trick but lotions are nicer. :D

I just thought £5 on tissues alone might end up in some serious sores....

You could save lots in Saudi. I practically save all of my salary over here bar embassy functions and food at the weekends.

I'm a teacher in Riyadh too, let me know when you arrive.

I suppose you could reuse the tissues - let them dry out in the sun for a while

Do your bit for the environment and all that clap trap (or was that for a years supply of lotion and tissues)

Get a box of free tissues with every SR 10 of petrol but you need a car to take the petrol away.
