Where do I start? (Canadian engaged to American)
I will be proposing to my girl after 4 years of dating. I'm a Canadian
citizen, living in Canada. She is an American citizen, living in the US.
I will propose soon, and we want to be married around Christmas. Is this
even possible?
Will I need to get a K-1 after we're engaged, and wait many months before
even going down there? Can't it be done any faster?
Why can't I just drive down & visit, make it look like I'm coming back to
Canada, then just get married during the 3 months I can stay as a visitor?
Wouldn't I be able to stay there & start working?
Please give me any starting advise, and any delays I might expect.
Do they care how much (or little) money I make? Does she need to have lots
of cash, or is being somewhat broke ok?
Thanks everybody.

Boy do you have a lot to learn. First you should have learned aftering dating a USC for 4 years is that you can visit the US as a Canadian citizen for 6 months not 3 months.
And no you can't do what you are proposing. It would be fraud. You have the time, go the K-1 fiancee route. In the overall scheme of things, you will rest easy knowing you didn't commit a fraudulent act and won't have to look over your shoulder for the rest of your BCIS life.
As for working, ain't a damn thing quick about it. Whether you sneak into the country and marry and stay or go the K-1 route. You will have to wait for the right to work. In fact the sneaky way you were proposing could mean up to 90 days without work and/or a social security card or longer. At least with the K-1 you have the ability to work for the first 90 days you arrive and you are eligible to get a social security.

BTW my hubby's Canadian and we went the K-1 route 5 years ago. It does work.

Thanks for your tip! I'll be reading the site asap.
6 months to visit, eh? I thought it was 3.
How long did it take for your husband to get the K-1 & be able to move there
from the time you applied for it? We want to be married by Christmas, but I
won't put the ring on her finger until July. Can we start the paperwork even
before we're officially engaged?
Thanks again!

Yes you can. We went through the Vermont Service Center because I live in New York and we started on March and finished in June and married in September. But that was 1998. Would help to know where your gf is living. Timeline depends on that.

Re: Where do I start? (Canadian engaged to American)
You can start on a K1 at anytime. I wouldn't plan a christmas wedding,
just in case. They have been known to take there time and it also
depends on what service center that you are using. As far as going
down and getting married, I am not sure. I know they have changed some
laws. But either way she is going to file an Affidavit of Support, and
if she doesn't meet the guide lines as far as income, then she will
hgave to get a co sponser to help with it. I would not wait to long to
start filing your K1, the sooner the better.

My girl lives in Texas. I wonder if they're normally speedy, or a little
slower than normal? (Not the people, the process...)

TSC is extremely slow. If they stay at this current wait you won't have the K-1 by December for the wedding. It is now April and believe people who filed in November are still waiting for the initial I-129F approval, then it goes to the NVC and then to the US Consulate in Montreal and/or Vancouver (your choice).

I is possible if she applies ASAP for the K-1 Fiance visa, you might be approved by Christmas even though it is threw Texas Service Centre. My Fiance applied there Dec 16, 2002 and we were approved March 31, 2003. The current time frame in Texas has gone up from 60-90 days to 150 to 180 days.
I strongly suggest you do all the right way instead of the sneaky way. I know it's discouraging but we're all going threw it and your not alone. You can make this happen : ) Good luck to you and her.
OH PS> no you dont have to be officially engaged before she applies but when you do propose the right way, make sure you keep the receip. They will want to see it as evidence of relationship among other things like love letters, photo's, phone bills and plane tickets to see her. To my knowlege you are only aloud to stay 90 days in the USA at a time. The 6 months stay you would have to file for a visitors visa. Alot of snow birds use them. With that you must prove you have enough funds to stay there for the entire 6 months.
4 years huh? what ya waiting for eh? lol
