When can he work? re: I-551
Hi Everyone...
My husband will hopefully be getting his I-551 stamp in a few weeks (!) and I'm wondering about his SS# and working...
On the DS-230 he has checked yes to the question about whether he wants a SS# assigned to him (thanks Michael D. Young!), so hopefully that will at least start the process.
My question is whether he can start working before he actually gets the SS#. Or, does he have to wait until he at least has a number, if not the card?
Thanks in advance...
Kim

he has to have a number. He won't get paid without it.

I would like to know if he gets an SSN as a result of this. We noticed
that option on the form and decided to visit an actual SSA office to
apply for the number. We thought it was safer...

I'll be sure to post experiences with the whole process...
And we'll definitely follow up with the SS administration a week or two after he gets here...

the day after my husband entered the country and received his I-551 stamp, we went down to the local social security office and applied for a card.
about a week to two weeks later we got it in the mail.

You need to give it three weeks. If the SSN card doesn't arrive within
three weeks or at least by the time he receives his I-551 card then he
needs to go into a Social Security office.

There is no requirement to have an SSN to be paid. Just need to show
the employer a receipt to show you have applied for an SSN. With EAE
not sure what you could use to show that you have applied.

Employer Responsibilities When Hiring Foreign Workers
Note that the employee may work while the Social Security number
application is being processed.
What if the worker doesn't have a Social Security number when wage
reports (Forms W-2) are due to Social Security?
Paper Filers: If the worker applied for a card but didn't receive the
number in time for filing, enter "Applied For" in Box d. (Reference: IRS
Instructions for Forms W-2/W-3)
Magnetic Tape/Diskette or Electronic Filers: If the worker applied for a
card but didn't receive the number in time for filing, enter all zeros
in the field for the Social Security number. (Reference: SSA's Magnetic
Media Reporting and Electronic Filing Format)
Remember to ask the worker to tell you the number and the exact name
printed on the card, when he or she receives it.
My foreign worker received his or her Social Security number after I
filed my wage report. What do I do?
When you receive the worker's Social Security number, file Form W-2c
(Corrected Wage and Tax Statement), to show the worker's number. Click
here for instructions on filing W-2c's.

Can someone give me an idiot's digest of what this is about?
I've only recently completed and returned my DS-230 - along with the othe
Packet 3 forms - to the US Embassy in London. I'm sure I would have noticed
if there was an option to request a SS#.
Please tell me I've not missed a trick. This is the first time I've heard
of this in the 18 months I've been reading here.

Depends on the type of visa you were issued. Enumeration At Entry (EAE) only
applies to people age 18 or older that have applied for and entered the U.S.
with a immigrant visa. All the K visas are nonimmigrant visas.

Many thanks for the clarification.
I assume then that the others in this thread were discussing a K3 or
something other than a K1.
