I have an interesting question:
Assuming no AP and conditional residency needed for travel....
How does the border guard/customs treat a conditional resident with only a
passport stamp and no physical green card?
Should a resident wait till he/she has the physical green card before
traveling outside the US?

There should be no difference in treatment with the card or I-551
passport stamp.
There is no need to wait for the card. The card is form I-551, and the
stamp is an I-551 stamp.
So, they are effectively the same.
