Default What if co-sponsors are retired?

Hello all, me again...

Ok, Mark and I have now taken that first step -- sending in our K-1 petition! Woohoo!! It's so nice to know the ball is finally -- officially -- rolling.

I started a thread about a week ago about getting co-sponsors for the Affidavit of Support, but didn't get feedback relating to my most pertinent questions. So I'm going to set them forth again here, thanks for bearing with me...

1) My parents (potential co-sponsors) are both retired, but have other non-employment sources of income -- military retirement pay, stocks, mutual funds, etc. What sorts of documentation do they need to provide when filling out the I-134 to be co-sponsors?

(Please, ANY links to this kind of info would be greatly appreciated. The INS site is crap on this subject.)

2) I don't know if my parents file their taxes jointly or separately -- does this matter? Can I ask one parent to be a co-sponsor, even if they both live together and file jointly? Or do they BOTH have to be co-sponsors?

Thanks in advance for any and all information you can provide!

Hi, I'm not sure about this, because I haven't looked into it myself. But, I think the first thing you should do is contact INS, and see if they can give you suggestions, they have a toll free number.
In my opinion, I think you would have to show your parents assests, for example: do they own a home? you could show copy of mortgage or title to the property. If they have stocks and bonds you have to list them and their market value on a separate sheet of paper and attach it to the I-134. Also, show a copy of their savings account. Anything to establish the ability to cover your future spouse's costs. I hope this helps and I hope someone who has gone through this can give you a better answer. best of luck and let me know how it goes.

P.S. you can download the form off the INS site, it may give you a clearer picture as to what you need to fill out and through the US embassy london site, there is the form, Evidence Which May Be Presented to Meet the Public Charge Provisions... (i think it's DS-2000) or something like that.

Kat, THANK YOU so much for your response. I feel like this stuff is right under my nose, but I'm so worried about sorting this out that I'm overlooking the obvious. Thank you for gently pushing me in the right direction. I'm going to have a look and see what I can figure out (fingers crossed)... yuck, I hate paperwork!!

Anyone else with feedback... KEEP IT COMIN'!! I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been in this position...

Hi Jenney. My father is retired and he co-sponsored my fiancée
recently without any problem, so I'll take a stab at your questions.

The documents they will need to provide will depend on what they will
be using to prove they meet the poverty guidelines for the number of
people in their household plus your fiancé. If they make enough with
their pensions alone, then you will only need a few recent pension
statements (which is what we used along with a bank letter, of
course). I would imagine for stocks and such their latest statements
would do the trick, but maybe someone else can clarify this.

My parents file their taxes jointly, but my father was the only
co-sponsor. I sent my fiancée a copy of their last tax return
including W-2's to show that his portion of their income was enough. I
think we would have been approved without the taxes actually, but I
didn't want to leave anything to chance. I know for sure though that
you CAN ask one to co-sponsor even if they file jointly.

I hope this helps a little. Good luck!

Thank you so, so much for your response, John. I *knew* there had to be someone out there who had the same situation!!

What consulate did you go through? We're going through London, and I believe they require the last 3 years' tax returns, among other things. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.) Does that mean I need 3 tax returns from my co-sponsor as well as myself?

Again, thanks so much for your help. If I need to ask you any more questions, look for postings with your name in the title!!

Hi Jenney. We went through the Bangkok embassy. They don't require tax
returns, but I did send my last return as well as my dad's (this was
listed as optional so I sent it anyway). If London requires 3 tax
returns then I'm sure they would want them from your co-sponsor as
well. They would probably accept the tax transcripts that you may have
seen mentioned a lot in here if you can't send copies of the actual
returns.

John
