vistior's visa and marriage
I have a friend i would like to come and visit. We think we want to be
married but would like some time together first. (As much as possible
actually). What is the best way of going about this? Can she come on a
vistor's visa and then marry me without having to return? How much time can
we reasonable expect to get on a vistor's visa? Can we apply for the K1 from
the US?

What you just said is a RED FLAG for the officials to pick you for
questioning. That's how the case being dragged on for a very long time.
"Thinking we want to be married" can mean alot of things.
One can be that they honestly want to marry and live together forever as
husband and wife.
The other can be that they just want to marry so they can come to America.
She later one may divorce him and stay. That is the intent originally.
The other can that the husband is trying to do something illegal behind a
curtain of legal rights for those honest people, which the laws are intended
to help.
There are many more scenerios on this matter.
That's why the process and interviews are needed .

Luke,
I posted this response to your query on 3/16/03 at 12:34 AM EST. Don't know
why, but my prior posting is no longer visible from my newsreader, thus the
repost:
David Brown's answer is the pat response to your question. There are
definite, and quite possibly severe, risks involved, but many couples have
married and successfully adjusted status from a tourist visa. Research the
issue and make an informed decision.
