Default US-Canada-US

If I am currently employed by my company in the US, then transferred
up to their Canada office for a few months, can I start the GC process
as an L1 assuming I am once again employed in the US office again?
How many months must one be in an overseas office before it counts?
Does it matter that a person was employed by the US side before going
to the overseas office?

Also, can I start the GC process but be overseas until a certain stage
kicks in?

Please help.

Nancy
