Transferring money

Hi everyone,
Merry Christmas.
My new British husband (since Dec. 1) sold his London flat today, netting a profit of
about 50,000 pounds, which was deposited into his UK bank account. We are researching
the best way to get that money transferred to our joint account in New York. We would
appreciate learning about other people's experiences.
Thanks so much.

As another Brit I am currently experiencing the same thing, although the sum in
my case is only in the order of £500. I have been told that a direct wire
transfer from a UK bank account (perhaps a relative who can deposit the money
temporarily in their account) to a US bank account can be a good idea, although I
have yet to contact my bank and enquire about it.

You can wire the money from the bank in the UK to a bank account in the US. I did
that once between a Swiss and American bank account. I think the cost was some
percentage of the amount to be transfered but not more then I think $10 or something.
You will need the bank account in the US as well as a routing number for the bank.
This is some special code that identifies a bank. Call your US bank. They should have
that information.

This is how we've been getting Schillings to Dollars. A nice thing about this is,
once it's set up, you can keep both account open. Only transfer what you need at the
time until the exchange rate is a bit better

I've just used something called a "Tipanet" transfer with the Co-op bank in UK to
transfer 1000 UK pounds to my Bank of America account. Cost me 8 UK pounds.

I know it is too late for you, but when I recently sold my house in the UK, the
solicitor dealing with the house sale transferred 100,000 pounds directly to my
joint US account at a cost of forty pounds. This took 48 hours before it appeared
over here.
I hope you find an option that works for you,
