Tony Blair talks of the special relationship between Uk and USA especially in the
light of recent events.

So why are UK citizens excluded from applying for the green card lottery?

Why as a merchant navy officer can I not live in Florida ,spend my income in florida
and get US citizenship.

Doesnt strike me as special !!

I don't know if this will make you feel any better, but the list of DV-eligible
countries is determined mechanically by the application of certain mathematical
algorithms to the immigration statistics of the previous 5 years. See INA section
203(c), available through http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/lawsregs/INA.htm.

The countries (of birth) which have sent the most nationals as immigrants to the
U.S. (through all the other categories of immigration) are not eligible for the
DV program.

The special relationship refers to the traditional UKUSA intelligence/military
collaboration. It has nothing to do with immigration. Americans have just as much
trouble (of not more) immigrating to the UK.

The DV program is intended to bring immigrants from underrepresented nations (hence
the term *diversity*). If you have something to bring to this country (happiness to
family already here, a scarce skill, or lots of money), you can go through the
regular immigration process.

Aren't you sorry about that little incident in 1776 now?

But why are the Irish allowed to apply for the lottery?

Northern Ireland is a part of Great Britain. How can they segregate one part of the
country like that?

They don't do that anywhere else in

Reciprocity (in one way or another) is the underlying force between all
"special relationships". Does the UK allow Americans to enter a lottery to
immigrate to the UK?

That has nothing to do with reciprocity. The visa lottery is officially called
"Diversity Immigrant Visa Program." The objective is to increase the diversity of the
American population. Since Britons are comparatively overrepresented in the US, they
are excluded from the lottery. That happens to over countries as well, e.g., Canada,
China, India, ...

No but we are about so send our people to get killed in a series of wars...it has
been suggested that we should wait two years before getting involved...bit like
another country did when Britain was up against the Germans? Will American forces be
parachuting into Northern Ireland and seeking and destroying the IRA they have been
blowing parts of uk up for years, financially supported by the US of course...
