Social Security Card / Name Change After Marriage question
Hi, first, I want to thank everyone for the great resource that this
newsgroup is! I just started learning about the K-1 process today and
it (along with all of the websites) have been a tremendous help! ^=^
************************************************** **********
Anyways, my Social Security Card questions are:
Should my fiance apply for her Social Security Card before we get
married?
Should we wait until after she receives the SS card to get married?
Should she wait until after we are married to apply for the SS card?
(sorry, redundant question)
************************************************** **********
And the Name Change After Marriage questions:
If she gets her SS card before we are married (with her maiden name),
are there any issues with getting her name changed on the SS card?
Also (and this is related to name change after marriage), will she
have to submit for a new passport from Japan after the name change?
Is anything else affected by the name change?
************************************************** **********
Thanks, sorry to ask so many questions... I'm still a bundle of nerves
from having studied this stuff for 16 hours nonstop today, to try to
get a handle on it. So any help (or related experiences) is *greatly*
appreciated!
As a side note, Yuriko's brother is working on bringing his wife from
Myanmar (Burma) to Japan on a fiance visa right now, too. We're all
just a bundle of nerves, hehe.
Thanks again!

As for the social security questions, she should apply for a SS# asa she arrives in the US on a K-1. She can apply to have the name changed to her married name after the marriage with an original certified copy of her marriage certificate. The passport can be used with her maiden name. Normally she would just need to bring an original certified copy of the marriage certificate with her when traveling. She can also apply at her Consulate in the US to have the passport amended to her married name or perhaps do it when she is visiting Japan at some time in the future before the passport's expiration.

Rete, thanks for the advice, you answered my questions and more!!!! I
was just concerned, because I've read conflicting advice about getting
SS cards (i.e. get it ASAP, get it after the name change/wedding,
etc.). And as far as the advice of bringing a certified copy of the
marriage certificate for the passport, *thank you*!!!! That's a great
idea!!!!
As far as Yuri's brother goes, I understand what you're saying, but he
lives in Japan (as a national) and is bringing his wife from Myanmar
to Japan (America is not involved) on a Japanese visa. I just thought
it was interesting and thought I'd mention it as a side note. ^=^
Thanks again!!!
