Default Russian medical examination

My fiance in Russia can expect to receive a letter from the embassy in a few
weeks or so, asking her to come for an interview. A medical examination is
required, and the US embassy website lists three clinics in Moscow, and one
in Vladivostok.

Does anyone know if there are any other locations where the medical
examination can take place? My finace lives in Siberia, a four hour plane
ride away from Moscow (it's like traveling cross country in America).

Novosibirsk, perhaps? AFAIK, there is not.
Here is what you she might need to do.

fly to Moscow
in the morning get medical (we went to the American Medical Clinic, cost
was $100 + $4 tax)
results were ready that evening
interview the next morning

Sounds like a plan (unless they schedule the interview for a Monday??).

Did you apply for a Fiance Visa? How many days did you have to wait for the
visa to be issued? My fiance lives in Tomsk, and I was wondering if we
could just go from Tomsk -> Moscow (examination/interview) -> America.
Would they let us pick up the passport/visa at the consulate?

Actually, we were married in the US, then filed I-130 with INS at the
Moscow Embassy at the end of March 2000. Within a couple of days (who
know how much sooner ) INS had approved the I-130 and passed it over
to the State Dept consular staff. The CR-1 interview came 40 days later,
and the visa was received the evening of the interview. Now, you can't
file I-130 there unless the US citizen is living in Russia (or other
area served by the embassy there). I also don't think you get the visa
the day of the interview anymore, but someone else might be able to
answer that. You might also want to look at the website or email
[email protected].

Hello David,

My wife is also from Siberia. Omsk to be specific. That was a 3 hr plane
ride. We just received her green card after this K-1 process.

As one who has been where you are. I am going to tell you straight. When we
asked the same question about another doctor the answer was no. My wife went
to the clinic 2 days before the interview and then stayed in a hotel until
the interview. The results for the medical take 24 hrs and you pick up a
sealed envelope from the clinic. Don't Open it! isn't that much to stay in a
pretty nice hotel. The hotel where we stayed had a van and as long as you
were a guest, they would take you where you needed to go.

I am going to give you a phone number to my travel agent in NY. They are all
Russian and know how to get it done. The agency name is Say Travel and you
need to talk to Dorina. Tell her Danny Davis referred you. If you are going
for the interview (something I recommend) they can handle everything for you
including your visa. The number is 212-571-2830.

Good luck,
Dan Davis

PS. If you don't mind me asking, where is she from?

One more thing. Email the consulate with this question. You may also ask how
long the results of the medical take since there is some variance. The other
advantage to waiting until just before the interview is that the medical is
good for at least 6 months. If you have to have a second interview like we
did then we had a current medical when she went two months later.

Hi,

Tomsk is where my fiance is from.

Based on your experience, how much does it cost for a hotel in Moscow?

Thanks!

I also was about to suggest the American Medical Center (I think they
have 2 locations?), are they US Embassy-qualified?

David, a hotel in Moscow can vary wildly....a lot of the cheap old
ex-Soviet hotels are being or have been torn down (such as the
Intourist)---my suggestion is either the Rossiya (not recommended, last
time I stayed there my room had roaches!) Rossiya is about $75 USD, the
Cosmos on the other side of town was recently rennovated, I have stayed
there too, but not since the new upgrade, but a buddy of mine that
stayed there said it was quite nice for the price, so you may want to
check that out also.

Maryanne------numerous trips to Moscow and have lost count

David,

I'm not too sure about another medical clinic for the exam other than
Moscow. Maybe Yekaterinaburg (spelling?).

I can tell you that the one medical clinic in Moscow can give you the
results the same day. My wife had her exam in October, so odds are good
that hasn't changed. I think it MIGHT be the American Medical others
have mentioned. I am fairly sure it is near the 1905 Gorod Metro
station. We were just talking about this last night as another friend's
fiance(e) is about to go to Moscow for her interview.

Good luck!

We went to the American Medical Center, exam in the morning, results the
same evening. It was about a block from a Metro station, but I can't
remember which.

It has a map showing the metro station.

If you can't recommend it, why would you suggest it?
There are many options for hotels in Moscow. It is also possible that
the fiance has a relative (even distant) or friends that might be able
to help them find a place. We once stayed at an apartment of a friend,
but at other times, we stayed at the Marriott Grand.

In any case, I know of only one place called American Medical Center in
Moscow and that is http://www.amcenters.com/contact_moscow.htm

I have 14 years travel exp. to Moscow.....I have a good idea of what
hotels are, and have been in many of them. I also use friends
recommendations. I know the city like I know the back of my own hand!

So there!!

There, where?
You gave them 2 suggestions, one of which you said was not recommended,
instead of 2 suggestions of hotels that you would recommend. You said
either this or this....

You said...
"-my suggestion is either the Rossiya (not recommended, last
time I stayed there my room had roaches!)"

I would not suggest either Rossiya or Cosmos, but that just my opinion.

Well, I thank you both for your replies! I don't want to seem like a
deceiver, but I have stayed in Moscow a few times. But I don't think I know
the place all that well, so I do want your input..

When I stayed in Moscow, I usually stayed at the Hotel Rossia. I really
don't like it, but I always go back there. It's the hotel I love to hate
    :-).

It's in the center of town (albeit on the other side of Red Square);
Kitay-gorod Metro station is a short walk from the hotel; they always seem
to have rooms available (the largest hotel in Europe??); the views are nice
if you have a room facing a street; the price is reasonable (about $125/day)
for a short stay, but I'm not sure I want to stay there for up to one week
(i.e. if I want my fiance to not have to return to Tomsk after the
interview); and the taxi counters in the hotel give you a fair,
non-negotiable price to the airport. That's what I like about it. But the
quality varies there.

The other hotels in Moscow seem to have different rates depending on when
you make your reservation, and if you walk in off the street, the prices are
ridiculous.

I once stayed in a hotel called Centralia (spelling?). It is on Tverskaya,
not far from Red Square. That price was about $30. If I have to stay in
Moscow for a week, and have to leave a lot of bagage in the room, I wonder
about Centralia. But I may just be being paranoid. But maybe that is what
I should do, if I need to camp out in Moscow for a week with my fiance while
she gets the physical and interview.

I like Moscow. It's a nice place to walk around, for a few days anyway.
