Proposing to girlfriend
I am a US citizen and I want to propose to my girlfriend who is in the US on a student visa which doesn't expire for a few years as long as she maintain status. We are planning a vacation together and she has received permission from school to travel back to her country which is also my parents birthplace (Thailand).
To my understanding a student visa is a nonimmigrant visa meaning that the beneficiary cannot have an immigrant intent.
I would like to know if I can propose to my girlfriend before we leave or maybe while in Thailand. Does this affect her status? We will not be getting married in Thailand while on this vacation. My intention is to just visit her parents as well as mine.
On our return will she have a problem rentering. Should I just delay asking and waiting until we are safely back in the US.

Just wait till you are back. U.S. immigration has no merci and
does not care about breaking up families; if there is

What impact does proposing have? It is not legally binding? You are just asking a question. I don't see, how the immigration officials would even know, that you proposed. Someone can propose today and not getting married for the next 10 years or even never.
Thats just my personal view of things...maybe law in USA does recognize proposals? Although I doubt it.

AFAIK, under some cases, USA law does/did recognise *acceptance* of a
proposal as a form of verbal contract. There was some kind of controversy a
while back, and it may in fact have been state law rather than federal law.
Sorry, my mind is *very* hazy on the details, but I do explicitly remember
that there was some kind of a hoo-hah about acceptance of a proposal and
verbal contracts.
I've enquired with a few of my attorney friends, as I'm now personally
interested as to exactly what the deal was. If I get an interesting answer,
I'll be sure to post it here.

Well when I propose doesn't she become my fiancee and not my girlfriend anymore. Now at point of entry can't she be denied even though she has a f1 visa cause it seems her intentions has changed.
