This is why we harp on about having health insurance in place before you move. Even with insurance medications can be expensive. We have a $1500 pp deductible now $3000 for the family (employers changed again plans so we chose this). So we generally pay for everything all year as we don't go to the doctors often and never meet our deductible. The pharmacy plan comes under the same deductible so we pay the full amount for prescriptions until we reach our deductible and then its a 10% share. The dudes nasal spray alone was $130 because it had no generic equivalent.

I can't imagine what the costs would be for the likes of my parents in law who practically bring another case on holiday for all their medications.

Will have a look at Kaiser permanente
Yes GeoffM, I thought my husband had it sorted but apparently he couldn't get insurance until we were over here.
I've got a doctor and he's given me a prescription but the insurance I have wont cover that. Just wondered if there was any other way round it?
There isn't unless either one of you can get a job that has some medical insurance coverage, is that possible? I read that you've moved over to retire, but that may not be possible and one of you may have to go to work. I guess the other option is to reconsider the move, unless you will be able to join up to Medicare and I would think you'd have to pay into that for a period of time before that is available to you. Medicare isn't the end all, be all for prescriptions either as I'm very sadly finding out in my grandmother's case.

Good luck!

Most insurance through a group plan will have a 1 year on pre-existing too.

You read now and then about people getting their prescriptions filled from Canada, but never had the need to do it myself. Would that be an option to garner some savings?

Definitely worth shopping around.....one of my little ones was on antibiotics for something or other last year.....CVS that we'd always used wanted $110. Switched to HEB over the road for $15....

I wondered if this would issue would come back .............
I have seen people repeatedly trying to explain this to her - it just won't seem to sink in.

You are totally missing the point - that is the stock in trade answer from any husband who wants to stop his wife nagging. It doesn't actually mean anything. I think you'll find it's an anagram of "be quiet woman - I'm watching the footie"

I use the pharmacy at Costco. Their prices were even better than my prescription plan.

Move back to the UK. The US is no place for anyone with any kind of illness.

Here is a good site that compares drug prices at different stores in your area. It also offers coupons for discounts. If it is generic drug, the price will likely be pretty cheap.

You will qualify after you've been here 6 months:

Under the Affordable Care Act insurance companies can no longer exclude pre-existing conditions (smoking-related conditions excluded, I believe) after Jan 1, 2014. Some insurance programs, such as the California plan that fatbrit references, may start covering pre-existing conditions sooner.

[It took 3 pages of posts before someone mentioned this, when 'Obamacare' was such a hot topic for the election?]

Yep -- PCIP plan from 6 months in to the end of the year, then the new non-excludable plans from 2014 onwards.
