yeah, i understand.. job security i'm presuming.
la petite, and just over a year. before that she worked as a legal secretary for a few years but quit due to hating it.

getting a work permit - does this happen automatically or can it only happen when you start processing the AoS?

Obtaining the EAD is not automatic; you have to apply for it. Form I-765 for the Employment Authorization Document (EAD) can be sent as part of the AOS package. There is no fee for the EAD when filed as part of the AOS package. It takes between 60 - 90 days to get EAD in hand after filing.

You can submit the application for employment authorization with your application to adjust status or any time afterwards.
