Default ordained minister wedding ok?

One of my best friends just informed me that he was now an ordained
minister. I would like him to marry my fiance and I.

Has anyone been married this way to their fiance with a K1 visa and had a
positive experience continuing on the K1 process?

Thanks,

John

The question of who wed us didn't even come up in the AOS interview. We were
wed by a minister of a non-denominational church in a historic building
(i.e., not in a church). As far as I know, you can be wed by a captain on a
ship.

As long as he is licensed by the State to perform the ceremony, there is no problem with INS.

It doesn't matter if he is ordained or not. The question is whether or
not he is legally able to perform a state recognized marriage in the
state he is performing it in. In California, for instance, it isn't
that difficult have a friend (ordained or not) to file paperwork to do
the ceremony for you.

Only if he is licensed to perform the ceromony based on the laws of the
ship's flagging, or the current location of the ship if in a country's
territorial waters. In most cases, ship captains (contrary to popular
belief) do not have the legal authority to do this.

that sounds right as my friend filled out the paperwork while living in CA.
Now he's back in NY.
What's the best agency to call to check on this - local/city INS/State INS?
