note to Canadian K-1's coming to US

If you have had a history of chicken pox, make sure the doctor that does your medical
notes this on your medical paperwork. My wife and I recently had our AOS interview and we
were told we should hear something by April or so......we received a letter from our local
INS office about two weeks ago requesting proof or further medical documentation regarding
vaccinations, specifically "chicken pox" or varicella as it is listed on the vaccination
record for INS. The INS sent us a copy of the medical report and vaccination record from
the Vancouver doctor and told us to take it to a local civilivan surgeon for review and
see what shots were still needed.....we contacted our INS office and they stated that
Vikki needed the varicella vaccination (chicken pox) we looked on the documentation from
Vancouver and saw that the doctor checked "not available in Canada" for this shot.
Vikki went to one of the accepted civil surgeon's for INS and they were about to give her
the shot when she mentioned that she had chicken pox as a child. As a result, they did not
give her the shot, but indicated "history of disease" which they guaranteed would be
acceptable to INS, if not, they would give her the shot for free and redo the paperwork.
so, if you have had the disease in the past, have your family doctor note this on your
shot record and hopefully the Vancouver doctor will find this acceptable and you will not
have any issues in the US once you get here......

Get out!! They really require that? There's a lot of controversy over here about the
chicken pox vaccine for children, because apparently the risk of side effects from the
vaccination are considered high compared to the number of possible serious side effects
from the disease itself...
Glad she didn't need the shot.

We had the same thiing happen to us! Chris went through Vancouver and had his medical at
the Woking Clinic. He had chickenpox in 1971. We went through Newark INS for AOS and had
to have another medical because it was over a year since the medical for the K1 Visa. To
prove that he had chickenpox he had to have an antibody titre test on his blood - which by
the way cost a lot more than the shot!
