there is no intent to get married right now, we just aren't there yet. we want to do everything by the book so as not to cause any damage.

Right now, your intent is irrelevant. What matters, is your intent the moment you enter the US.
That's great - but from the thrust of your posts so far, that's not actually what you want to do.

The most straight-forward and risk-free way to be together is for her to either file an I129F (which she can do now, assuming you've met in person at least once) or get married and file for a CR1 visa. There's a handy comparison wiki at the top of the forum.

If *after* arriving you decide you want to get married, there is nothing wrong with filing an application to adjust status. It is a totally legal and valid path to a Greencard based on marriage to a U.S. Citizen.
Many people on this forum parrot information that is not accurate. If you do get married consult and immigration lawyer before you leave.

And there is no proof for that "sudden" decision, so you are left hoping that the officer assigned to your case believes you, because if they don’t, which despite Jermi's assertions to the contrary, is entirely possible, you face removal proceedings and a ban from returning.

At this point, let's agree that there are different ideas on this thread, and the OP has the information needed to make an informed decision.
