piggybacking this thread for a minute... when originals, or at least those cert copies courts given, are produced for this visa process, are they given back? And also, is anyone else (UK) who is divorced also like me in that they no longer have their marriage certificate - just a divorce decree? my solicitor took my marriage cert, said the court needed it and i wouldnt get it back.
I'm real worried about proving the change from my maiden name to my married name.

Sorry to hijack

Sorry to the OP but I had this problem. When you divorce the Family Lawyer is required to submit the marriage Certificate to the Divorce Court, the original marriage certificate is not required by Immigration as you Decree Absolute proves that although the document did exist it is no longer available. I submitted my absolute only. Yes you do get the document returned.

There have actually been times when the original marriage certificate from a previous marriage has been requested, as well as the divorce decree from that marriage (most of us think the divorce cert is proof the person was previously married, but hey..) You can order a certified copy of your own from BDM and since it's easy to get while you're still in the UK, it is not a bad idea to do so.

Original documents presented at the interview are returned, if you also hand over a photocopy of the document for the CO to keep. My photocopies were stamped 'original inspected'.
